Buying 2nd hand gaming components

Good night friends

I want to get a new rig but unfortunately price is an issue. So I guess 2nd hand is my best option, but I have never bought 2nd hand PC components, what advice can you guys give me as it is risky as ya'll may know

Have a look at carbonite.co.za, buy from people with decent iTrader scores and you'll be fine. Oh and read the rules.

you really want to find that regular upgrader, also avoid stuff that's been overclocked and you shouldn't have too much trouble.
I've had factory new stuff die (that why a warranty is good), but I 've also had cards that I've handed down and they just keep going for years.
Buy Quality 2nd hand also not cheap 2nd hand brands so do your research. There was this one brand of hard drive years ago that was famous for dying not long out of warranty.

The only thing to avoid 2nd hand is an hard drive.

I've been running overclocked hardware for years and they have the same lifespan of non-oc hardware, especially K Intel CPUs.

Yes and no, in the hands of an experienced overclocker or someone that's not pushing the kit to the edge the components will not have a degraded lifetime. However, undercool your CPU and overclock it to stupid levels and it won't last. Well maybe it lasted for you, but it sure as hell will not last for the next person.

So you basically need everything for R20k?

Oh, and if you wonder why I said RAID1 on the SSDs. If one SSD fails you pop in a replacement for it and continue on your merry way.

I totally agree with the RAID solution. very asute. i like the rough build you have going there. would you say that the build you suggested could keep my gaming comfortably for a while, but still has a good upgradability factor?

That will be a decently usable machine for quite some time. You can always get a better motherboard or an i7 if you so desire. Hell, you can double the RAM if you really want.

Thanks man i really apprecaite it. i work in commercial IT so i can build you a workstation that will rock your socks off but gaming i am inexperienced with

That a real nice build, with a 1070 in it will give you a decent life span on the gaming rig. If you only play on a monitor the supports 1080p resolution and want to save costs then look at the then AMD RX480 or the Nvidia 1060 cards.

Yeah, the rig leave quite a bit of room for tweaking costs. RAM could be dropped down to 8GB, GPU can be flipped to a RX480 or GTX1060 to bring costs down. Extra SSD can be removed to save costs, etc etc.

i see okay i like the idea of the spare SSD, I wont raid it but i will keep a updated VHD of the SSD on the 2TB drive so that i can just reimage if something happens.
