C&C to Return

Thread Killer Mk VIII
EA has quietly redone the command and conquer website. They're have hired a new studio and a new community manager.

As of my posting this the website is down, lol. Too much traffic maybe.

This happened all of sudden, and quietly. EA stealth-rebooted its Command & Conquer website, announcing in quick sucession a new community manager, a whole new studio and a brand new, mystery C&C game.

We thought it was all over. (C’mon, we didn’t think it was all over for even a second). It isn’t now. Sounds like they’re really going for it this time. Commandingly, they sound like they want to conquer strategy again.

Very, very few details to go on as yet, but the new studio is based in three locations (LA, Texas, Shanghai), is called Victory Games and will head up EA’s entire strategy portfolio (somewhat hobbled by the closure of EA LA last year). Was there really not a Victory Games before? It is a fine name. They should be proud of it.

The telltale line, so far, comes from the aforementioned new studio’s boss Jon Van Caneghem, who says in an interview with his own site that “Our current focus is making a AAA Command & Conquer game, which I am very excited to be working on…”

Thankfully, AAA for once doesn’t mean ‘console.’ He continues, “I can tell you it’s a Command & Conquer game for the PC, but we’re not yet at a stage where I can go into any details— we’ll be prepared to make a more formal announcement later in the year. We’re not just working on a game, though. Our general focus is on the future of Command & Conquer. That means updating a lot of the core technology to create a stable base for future development, and leveraging that work on this first game.”

I’m guessing that’s going to mean something more persistently online, to be the CoD of RTS, or perhaps even the WoW of RTS. That is a complete guess, but as it’s an avenue more people are exploring and that StarCraft II perhaps didn’t go quite as far with as it could have done (preferring instead to stick to very swish ultra-competitive play) there remains a gap for it..

There’s also this line, hidden in the About page:

“With over 30 million sold, Command & Conquer now looks to the future, with plans to combine classic RTS gameplay with bold new technology, innovative new concepts and, as always, tanks by the dozen.”

I’m quite excited, to be honest. C&C4, despite trying very hard to be different and a bold break with the past, also seemed to me to hint that EA as a business had lost no small amount of interest in PC strategy. All this rather sounds like they’ve changed their mind. I’m going to wildly guess they’ll call the new game simply “Command & Conquer”. COLONS AND SUBTITLES ARE THE PAST.

We will see. cnc 4 was one of the worst games I have ever had the displeasure of owning:(

gonna be keeping a close eye on this, i am a massive C&C fan, after 4 i was severly let down, but who knows, the next one might be good again

If they revert back to the classic, build base collect tiberian or ore then it is good in my books.

Basically the classic gameplay.

You got to face it, Starcraft2 is so epic! bringing out a better RTS title will be extremely difficult. If this game does not take at least 4 years+ for development I don't see that it will be the next big RTS title.

It's like COD, bringing out a COD every year which is fail since COD 4....

If I'm seeing the SAGE engine in this new CNC title I will cry!

I thought starcraft 2 was meh. The campaign pissed me off. I mean most of the missions where on a timer. Not to mention it did not capture the first one in my eyes.

Did not bother with mp as I suck at rts mp games:p

SC2 is all about MP. It has so much depth in the game play. Way better than any CNC title ever, and this is coming from a CNC fanatic at a time. I realized that it's a fail after Westwood went out the door. Generals and TW was the last CNC title I enjoyed. I was like 14 or something when the first CNC came out. Since then I was a RTS fanatic in general. Those were the good old days... Well CNC died and that's a fact, there is such a big SC2 local community now as well. CNC never reached that.

I will also be keeping a close eye on this. I'm a huge C&C and it was the first game that was ever bought for me when I was a keed. This was the first C&C I'm talking about now.

The last one was an epic fail, sies. I didn't even buy it and I'm glad. The gameplay looked so crap, I can't believe how they could make it so bad. If this new studio can make a C&C that return to it's roots, but still manages to bring something new I'll definitely buy it and I'm very excited about this. The last good C&C game was Generals, and that was a long time ago.

Please make us a C&C game that doesn't look like RTS had a child with Diablo, pleeeeease!!! :D

Dude, there is no way to compare the 2 games..No way. You can't even compare COH with Starcraft II. SCII is not the only good RTS franchise out there ya know.. ;) Also, this doesn't have to go the same road that COD went. If these guys are really serious about giving the series a proper reboot, they can make something awesome. But yes, if they use the same engine the last game used, or at least, if they use the same mechanics then I'm already put off completely.

C&C is one of those IP that should just be left to die in piece. For god sake stop rehashing franchises that died years ago and focus on new IPs.

I agree. Kinda getting sick of rehashes of old games lately. I do however think they should to a sequel to generals. Just take the cnc out of it.

I agree, I'm merely stating this about SC2 as it sold 4.5 million copies all ready since release. It's the most popular RTS title at the moment, and in my opinion the best.

Like I said. I don't play rts games online. And besides why should every game focus on mp? I only enjoy fps online and even then nothing beats a good single player game.

the tiberium universe is dead to me sadly after the abortion that was cnc 4. epic conclusion? epic fail maybe...

red alert can still be salvaged. just lose 3 from the series and continue on from the end of yuri's revenge dammit!

as for generals, well needs more!

other than that, new sub-uni might be cool.

That's why I was saying 4 years plus of development needed otherwise I think it will fail. SC2 took 7 years odd, and what a great game it turned out to be.

Look I want it to be a success but in recent years of CNC it's hard to think otherwise. CNC: Tiberium Twiglight was like the baddest CNC title ever. I got as far as beta :p

Waste of money to me if I'm not playing MP, besides SC2 is highly competitive and I suppose that drives people as well, cause they want to be good at it.

Like it or not MP is what drives PC games, without it the industry would die. That would be a sad day.

MP drives all games Dre, not just pc.

although alot of games are awesome without mp.
