Calling all BF2 players

If you have played BF2 and flown jets, please give me your comments, if you have not your still welcome to :)

I have been scouring the net on whether a joystick or game pad will be needed to fly the BF3 jets at a good level.

I consider myself to be pretty dam good in the BC2 choppers only 2nd to Tooken and i still give that bugger a run for his money, but its stressful :)

So opinions, experiences peeps, will a joystick really be needed or will the KB + Mouse combo suffice?

The beta is coming out in Sep and so atleast then if their are jets i would be able to get a better idea!

Some of the very best "pilots" that I've ever seen in BF2 (back in the day) used nothing more than a keyboard and a mouse. Even in BF2 Bad Company I fly totally fine with a keyboard and mouse combo. The trick is to pick a setup and practice with it and then stick with it.

i would 100% agree on that, from what i understand though, the choppers in BC2 are nothing like their BF2 counterparts, that makes sense, BF2 choppers we way more manoeuvrable compared to the BC2 choppers, personally i fly KB + Mouse in BC2 and i find it to be perfect for me, myself and tooks are both hoping that things are abit more complicated so that it takes a real amount of skill to fly but on the other hand DICE will want every1 to enjoy that game and every part of it including flying....

Thanks for the word Neo

I use the mouse and keyboard combination in BF2, BC2. We can only speculate if a joystick will give any sort of advantage over a keyboard or mouse in BF3.

From my experience in BF2. The mouse+keyboard combo worked well. I have also seen the joystick being used by certain jet pilots. Joysticks only seemed to provide improvement to hadeling the jets and no improvement to choppers. Some players also used controllers to fly choppers, but this was very rare. Also note that with the release of BF2 patch v1.5 the controle setting changed and allowed for players with expensive joystick/controlers to use more refine and in dept settings.

In my opinion it will be best to wait for the Beta/final package to be released before deciding wether a joystick or game controller will be usefull in any way. If it turns out as BC2 did, a game controller can be usefull, but the joystick will just be a waste.

I agree. But I have to say that the choppers in BC2 are very dull. No maneuvering whatsoever, and they feel so bulky.

I usually fought from the heavens whether it was in a Fighter aircraft, bomber or a helicopter. I prefer flying jets with the joystick, personal preference, and the helicopter with the keyboard.

Why not borrow someones joystick and try it out first instead of spending money on one with the possibility of not liking it. Mouse and Keyboard does it for me, everyone to their own

I friggen HATED the jet servers.

<3 my choppers! I'll be giving my X360 controller a try to see how it gels with BF3 if it's possible at all.

Here's to hoping they make infantry servers like they did with Battlefield 2!

No! That is what makes Battlefield such an awesome game. Combining vehicles, helicopters and infantry to capture points is what makes Battlefield stand out from the rest. Imagine that your squad is pinned down by an enemy tank and you do not have the gear to attack the tank and you are about to give up hope when suddenly a TV-Guided Missile out of nowhere demolishes the enemy tank.

There is nothing more beautiful than a tactical bombing run, ah it brings tears to my eyes.

The one thing I always noticed was how everyone waited for a jet to spawn , sometimes players even TK'ing teammates for a jet ride lol funny now, but was really annoying then

Whahaha! Knife / C4 / Claymore fights on the poopdeck :D

I wish I could wipe from my memory the amount of times I flew off in a jet only to be C4'd halfway through my take off.

IMHO, I was playing on incredibly sucky lag for a very long time and ended up playing Commander most of the time. Needed 30 more hours for my distinguished service medal. :( But as much as I sucked, I still hold the 2nd highest RSA player IAR score of 438 or something. :p

I played with both kb+mouse and joystick in BF2. Flying wasn't challenging so it worked with both. I just preferred playing with joystick when doing stunts / dogfights, it just felt cooler :D
If going to be hopping in and out of aircraft / tanks / infantry then just stuck to using kb + mouse.

I always struggled to fly in BF1942, got the hang of it eventually but it took a while.

To joystick or not to joystick, that is the question...

I think it comes down to your personal preference. I used a joystick for jets and keyboard/mouse for choppers in BF2. Either one can work if you adjust your settings and gameplay accordingly.

As for the comment about Infantry only servers... I am convinced there will be IO servers which is a real shame. BF was supposed to be about warfare not only the infantry aspect of it. Since DICE/EA have decided to try and take on Activision/Infinity Ward, they've started to cater to the lowest common denominator and that brought about the infantry only servers.

To me it kills the game and restricts the need for team work. I think we will simply see another COD wannabe from BF3 :(

I remember the days before IO came to BF2, you'd have a six man squad working together to take out a tank or APC, miss those days.

thanks for the feedback guys

for me i'd rather stay with a KB + mouse combo cause i'll be all over the place
ill def try the xbox controller with the jets but im pretty dam sure the KB + mouse combo will be excellent for helicopters.

Time will tell in about 1 month :)

My BF2 Jet stats:
Time:111:46:11
Kills:6,970
Deaths: 2,243
KDR: 3.4035

And I never thought I was good, had heaps of guys I could never beat and frequently crashed trying to fly through tunnels..

If you want to become really proficient flying a jet and are semi-serious about this, a joystick is a must. The control of a quality joystick, with camera angles bound to the HAT switch, thrust perfectly configured and a twist handle for slight adjustments for strafes is second to no M+KB combo.

That being said, there were some guys that absolutely DECIMATED all ground or air targets with a M+KB. I recall watching FIB Assassin playing at a rAge with this setup.. MONSTER mouse pad and moving the mouse within the area of about 1 meter squared... But damn, he could shoot.

If you aren't serious about being a flyboy, you'll still notice the difference when flying against a joystick pilot.

This is the really important feedback that i was hoping to find....

i guess i'll be getting a joystick, gamepad sounds good, but joystick seems to make more sense

they key word you used is serious and the amount of mouse pad space required, seems the joystick is a LOGICAL choice for me

Thanks dude, i have struck gold here :) your feedback is invaluable!
