Hi Guys

I require some advise here.

For the last 10 years I have been working in I.T mainly doing the following:-

Take note non of these I would consider a High professional level (i.e. not permitted to write applications, Support Financial or Operational processes, however was permitted to Write code in MSAccess, Testing of applications:-

ERP support
Desktop Support (Citrix, Printers ,In-House application support, MSAccess Support)
Anti-Virus (Purely ensuring Clients and Repositories are up to date)
SQL Administration (Providing access to Tables/Views , DB restoring, checking load, Setting up of new Databases)
Application Testing(in-house application)
Network Support (Not configure or set-up devices, but rather report line issues or load on lines)
Crystal Report Writing (Only handling the look and feel or reports, Not actually writing the Store Proc)
And Many other things. So you could say not an expert.

So of late, I have been feeling no challenge in my work, feeling like I'm just putty that the company likes to use as body filler.

Now I have been studying to get an IT diploma.

So the advice comes here:-
Where I am, I have good colleagues that I get along with, sometimes the work can be interesting (20% of time), they have paid me well and looked after me. I don't know if it is the loyalty that is holding me back as I have been here for +11 years.

Now I want to have a challenge in my life, really want to do problem solving and writing code which is not a possibility at the current company. Here's the thing right, everyone say's the grass is not greener on the other side. I mean I have never done full time programming or dealt with working in a different style of an I.T department as I have been exclusively doing I.T at this current company.

If there are guys who have had this scenario or is currently a dev for a company. What is it like, what are the negatives, is what I am trying to get at.

The fear I have is the following:-

What if I am not a great programmer and the company hires me but lets me go after the probation period?

What if the new company I work for has a really high staff turnover due to its poor employee satisfaction?

Bare in mind I need to take into account that I have a house to pay and other responsibilities.

TlDr - Wanna go from Software support into development. Doesn't matter what language as I have little knoweledge in C++;Java;VB and T-SQL (Not expert, but enough to be able to read someone's code and adapt it, or write simple code) what is it like being a developer.
