Casual or Competitive?

I've had a thought about it, and although this is said a bit tongue-in-cheek, here are some classifications of gamers I came up with:

True Casual
Informed Casual
Competitive Casual
Social Competitive
True Competitive

I guess then I am a True Casual gamer.
Besides, I will just put everyone to shame when playing competitive. Haters will accumulate and I will have to proof there is no aim-bot involved - again. I do not have the strength for that.

well not really labels per se, but more titles if you will. Even in the work place, I hate it. I hate being classified as something. Does it make you more superior than I am? not a fuck!

Just because you may play BF professionally, does that make you better than me? That's where I'm going with it. Maybe that's your way of having fun with it, but my way is to play 10 hours a week, does that make me casual. I have a lot less time on my hands for games so thus in my eyes I'm spending a lot of MY time gaming therefor I could see myself a hardcore gamer.

Makes sense to some extent. But for example your BF example. Being a professional at something and just having lots of hours on a game are 2 totally different things. I have played games with people with more than 6 thousand hours in a game, looking like they play with their screen switched off. And then I have seen people with 100 hours kicking ass ( Probably hacking). So if a guy is a professional gamer, he probably is better at the game than you, otherwise he won't be a professional.

I think people have different ideas of being a hardcore gamer. If you are a competitive gamer i naturally presume you are a hardcore games as you have to put in the time and effort to be good and get better.
Other people would say a hardcore gamer is someone that just racks up plenty of hours

Obviously this is only a guide and not a very concrete line in the sand that if you cross it, you automatically become amazing at it. Some people have a natural ability and talent many of us do not poses. But, with enough repetition of an activity, it's safe to assume that you will start to master that activity. I guess the same can be said about gaming.

You get guys that have played for years, but they lack game sense. They can aim decently, but when they are in a situation where they have to use game sense to solve it... they fold and fail.

I cringe really hard whenever an entire team gets blindsided by 1 guy...how can you not hear/see that theres someone behind you raping your teammates. sure the 1st guy gets caught off guard, but from there!???

Gamesense is something some people will just never have...the same thing can almost be said for musical people...either you have rhythm or you don't, either you're tonedeaf or you aren't. Only INSANE focus will change that.

An interesting point that then can be made from both your rebuttals are that a person can have a natural talent for playing games, a talent much like some people have for playing musical instruments or for a particular sport. As it is with those activities as well, those of us that are naturally more talented than the other will be better at the activity than other competitors.

And, seeing as talent is something that can differentiate gamers from one another, it's another proof of the argument that gaming can be seen as a sport of sorts, much like chess is seen as a sport.

I am like that musically. I can play guitar. Not because I am talented, picked one up and saw i could play, but i had to work super hard and teach myself. Game sense just come naturally to me on the other hand

And the on steam itself you can download a free movie about the Dota World Cup called Free to Play.

Their dedication and sacrifices they have to make is on another level. The same as any other sport

I voted for casual, though from reading the thread I think the term was maybe poorly chosen. For example, certain games I play almost daily, so I could be considered a fairly dedicated gamer in that regard. Other games are just for relaxation and fun. However, I have no interest in playing at a competitive level or becoming professional in any manner, so that counts me out of the second category.

I agree that perhaps a middle-ground option would have been good, perhaps even more:
Social
Casual
Dedicated
Hardcore
Competitive
Professional..

Anyway, this isn't about being classified as just one type or another, it's about choosing which of the OP's two chosen groupings describe you most well.
By his definition, I count as a Casual gamer.
