CD Projekt RED explains 9GB Steam patch for The Witcher 2

Ouch, thankfully this doesn't happen often - the Steam distribution platform still works so well!!

PS - yes I didn't buy the Steam version.

Steam patches games using file comparison, so its unavoidable unless the developers break up large pack files into smaller and more numerous ones. A couple of my games have had some large patches before because the patch touched a couple big files.

...however it might be possible to just let steam start to update, close steam, copy the binaries over from someone's updated installation and start up steam.
You can do this. Let your friend start the BBC2 download and let it download about 2 megs or so then pause it. Next copy your up to date game folder to his/her steamapps/BBC2 folder, overwrite all files in there. Finally resume the download and Steam will see the game files are there and the download will go really fast. Once done, play and enjoy. :)

Steam will download any files that don't match it's database, this is usually the game .exe only.

How about those massive patches for Team Fortress 2? I installed the game... saw the size patches and uninstalled it 2 minutes later. Haha but I think Witcher 2 is so worth that patch... but let's hope they'll have a smaller one available soon!

Indeed. GoG here :D

But true the article. CD Projeckt owned up to the problem and is striving to fix it. Quality right there! Where the hell is this kinda attitude from other devs and publishers?

9GB patches? Really Really? That is really scary, mense. If you don't have uncapped/pay a lot for a big ADSL package, I feel sorry for you if you bought this via Steam.

Well. As stated in other articles concerning this issue - it is due to everything being packed into a single archive. Due to Steams distribution coupled with the way the game was set up, I guess there is no other alternative presently other than dl'ing the whole archive each time. Will be interesting to see how this is bridged. And as you say...capped accounts getting eaten alive.

I've always thought it to be a really bad idea to dump all your assets in a single archive.
Developers really to tend to bring up the ass-end of common sense sometimes...

Break up your large asset archives into smaller multiples.
Is it REALLY that hard to exercise some common sense into what you do?!

Webafrica has steam on freezone so it's not really a problem. Just a time issue

I really don't understand why there would be such a big difference between owning a digital and steam install? surely once you have the game installed they are patched the same? anyone wana explain this to me?
