CDProjekt lays off legal threats to supposed pirates

I don't condone piracy in the slightest, but I still think developers are spending too much time trying to stop pirates, when they should be spending more time converting pirates.
They do, but people would still take without giving you know it goes.

As long as the internet is unrestricted, piracy is always going to be an issue. Even if developers start offering games at R50 and give you a free coupon for a meal at a classy french restaurant, people are still going to pirate, because people are greedy little shits.
I got my shogun this way, there was in fact a free coupon meal for some strange place in hatfield PTA .

Same arguments ....... all those ranting about piracy, please look at your apps and movies and series and mp3's before ranting. I reckon there is like 2% of people who can have a rant without being a hypocrite. The rest, shut up.
Why so aggressive? I agree with Graal. When last did you actually go out and buy something? Sigh if you really must know I got myself Eks Die Ou on Thursday from look and listen...

Problem arguement is that its assuming those that pirated would have bought the game if they couldn't pirate it. Imho the percentage of those pirating who would actually buy the game is very low.

Don't have a problem with CD Projekt or any other company throwing the law at them thought. As long as at the same time they continue to treat us genuine customers properly.

Not assuming pirating = lost sale at all, I think in a number of threads this has been discussed ad nauseum. I'm looking at pirates and expecting better behavior.

How about you start contributing something of worth to the discussion or gtfo out?

Edit: more fitting

PS - how about follow James' suggestion about not even fucking addressing me, ok. Can you intel that?

No, how about you stop running around, saying absolutely moronic things and then running to James and crying when I tell you you're a moron?

Edit: and I see you're still not contributing anything of worth to the discussion. James' suggestion isn't a free pass for you to say stupid shit and get away with it.

We're having a perfectly valid (and civil, I might add) conversation and in you come, telling us to shut up. You expect us to just ignore that?

Because it's hypocritical to act so saintly about gaming pirates when everything else is pirated. To not think that is lacking serious logic. And to answer your question, the last games I bought were BF3 and Skyrim, even though I almost exclusively play DDO. I also have a box of 300 cd's. I buy and pirate, which is what the major majority do. Can you tell me you have not 1 pirated thing on your system right now?

We've been through this before, I've answered this already. To be short all areas must be handled same even obeying traffic laws, that means driving 60 in a 60 zone. Just because it's a habbit doesn't mean it can change*. If you can't do this then please go seek justification some place else.

*This means actually starting to buy things even if you have not done this before. Much less than a sin than not to start replacing you stolen goods with retail goods. In fact I do even buy the oldies I've pirated, that includes unreal or even duke nukem 3D. Even so to the point that I've bought 4x copies of l4d for other people to amend for my 4x times I just gave it out.

Now please take your panty fretting to PM if you are going to continue this nonsense with Graal and Graal please do the same. He is in part correct we were having a good conversation till you in your usual emotional manner pitched up and just went FB-EMO on all of us where you could have easily done it in a non-cluster-**** method.

Any further baiting or emo response will be ignored so don't expect a reply you know how the PM system works if you really must.

So you won't say if you have pirated stuff, dodge the question much?

Until someone who is vociferously against piracy can say in all honesty that he/she supports not even 1 form of piracy, they are hypocrites, easy as that.

And just to add, you're a fine one to talk, many of your posts contain this shit -

/rant opinion out.

ps. Yes I'm a professional developer and this kind of attitude seriously pisses me off.

so don't be all high and mighty calling other people emo when clearly you are the emo one ;)

Unless you have basic fail understanding I've not dodged the question, however let me be very clear and very simple it seems it's required for you to fully grasp an argument.

1) Don't moan if you don't obey all areas
Now, sigh, lets look what this mean:
I have good record of buying my games (A), but I pirate music (B). A is legal, B is wrong. Now how to fix B? You start like me by buying your music month to month. Unless you have unlimited funds you can't in one go replace all stolen music. Why? because funds < total mp3. I hope that was clear and simple enough.

2) Does this even mean after 1 that I still have to obey other rules?
Yes simply because as pointed out you can't buy all your things legally, but not obey state law which includes traffic law. So does this mean I have to drive 60 in a 60 zone? Yes not driving 60 in a 60 zone is a threat to the flow of things and disobedience towards the law of the road. OMG what is the flow of things? Well the flow of things is all things needs to be done in a certain way that they don't go against each other, this means driving habits of all people must match and be in accordance of prescribed rules.

3) You lying son of a bitch, you fucker you, you are dodging and you have pirated goods !
If you can do basic maths of 1+1, meaning deduction I've never said I'm a total saint nor I don't have stolen goods. So your total argument is bullshit, you're a fucker, a lair, a hypocrite!!! No it seems you are still missing the point, He who says that he drives 60 and actually drives 90 is all that you've are saying, it's the truth. Hey that's not the same as what you are saying ! In fact I've stated that

A) I don't pirate games which is true, I don't.
B) You've asked do I have pirated goods right now in my pc, I've no where denied that I don't.
C) I then answered with all areas should be in the clear (please see no1 and no2 if still confusing).
D) I've added that habits can changed which I'm doing.

Now to be hypocrite A would be true, C and D would not be. Simply meaning that I still pirate music, movies, series, comics and so on, but I say that I don't pirate games. That I will agree too, BUT when A, C and D is true how can one still be a hypocrite, because being a hypocrite means doing one thing saying another thing which I don't

I hope that you got the gist now, that this explanation was more easy going one you where I excluded the function of deduction.

Oh ...... so part pirate is justifiable. Gothca. I lost my video collection in a fire so until I can replace it financially, I'm gonna keep up to date with all the latest series by downloading them because for real, one day I will buy them. I'm also gonna keep downloading mp3's because the bank is not my friend and the local stores didn't stock my music when it was released, but for real, one day I will buy the cd's.

It's an argument that can be used because it's justified.

If someone is against piracy and they really do try not to pirate, by all means there is nothing wrong with that and I will even applaud it. But when someone goes beyond stating that fact and gets all 'ranty' at others .... well, I tend to not even take that person seriously anymore. Like I said, I buy shit when I can and while it may not be a lot, in a game sense - 4 games in a year - to put it in perspective, I only have one pirate game on my pc.

There's a difference between being passionate about something you do for a living and being emo.

Either way, we're all guilty of piracy to some degree, but that doesn't mean we can't have a valid discussion on curbing piracy or the ramifications of the issue.

I've been buying old games that I pirated previously all year long. Just to name a few from the first part of my Steam collection (because I'm honestly not going to write out every game, the list is too long), Amnesia, Batman AA, Borderlands, Brothers in Arms 1, Darksiders, Oblivion, the FEAR collection, New Vegas, the entire GTA series (granted, I already owned GTA4 but pirated the rest), Just Cause 2, DoW2 and expansions. Out of the lot mentioned there, I only played a bit of Batman, Borderlands and one of the FEAR titles, and I have no intention of really playing any of them to completion again. Yet I bought them, games I previously pirated and finished.

Hell, just this morning I deleted my pirate copy of Shogun 2 seeing as the legit game which I purchased earlier this week finished downloading overnight. Anybody with a Steam account can check my purchase history and see the validity of this claim.

I'm not innocent of piracy, but I at least buy that which I previously pirated, even if I know I'm never going to play them again. Aside from a bit of Shogun 2, I can't really remember the last time I played a pirated game.

Graal, like in my above post -

I have nothing against someone who is passionate, I am passionate about stuff myself but it's when it turns into a sermon from upon high that it starts to get me grated. I have been at the receiving end and seen a lot of judgement passed in my life and I dislike it more than I'm guilty of it. So when a discussion takes that turn and judgement starts getting passed, my hair goes up and I have to respond ..... passionately, as much as you wanna call it emo.

I used to be a massive gamer, and bought all I could because it was the days of big game boxes and manuals and stuff so I know about buying and appreciating. It's just that I also sympathise with guys who pirate because even though people say "OH it's a hobby and it's expensive, blah blah", everyone needs something to escape with. I'm not talking about the guys who earn R30k a month and still have TB's of games, I'm talking about the student or poorer guy who grabs a game or two. Most of them turn out like yourself and Prophet and buy their games when they can.

Not all piracy is linked to greed. Most of the music I listen to is not available in SA and there are times when I need to grab an album before finally being able to get it legit a few months later. Scenarios like these are more the norm than the greed scenarios imo. Most gamers I know are supporters more than pirates.

You're still missing the point entirely.

Nobody is being a hypocrite, because nobody said that they don't have pirated wares on their PC.
Nobody is trying to justify their piracy, because it can't be justified.

Remove those two points, and what is left of your argument? That we can't debate the moral implications of piracy, or how to curb it, simply because we have/used to have pirated wares ourselves?

I'm not talking about the guys who earn R30k a month and still have TB's of games, I'm talking about the student or poorer guy who grabs a game or two. Most of them turn out like yourself and Prophet and buy their games when they can.

But the thing is, we're discussing how to stop that kind of mass piracy. ;)
Even though I pirate something every once in a while, if a solution to stop piracy entirely appeared, I'd jump to embrace it.
No matter the circumstances, piracy cannot be justified logically, and it remains wrong no matter the way in which you look at it. It's basically someone taking another person's hard work without paying him for it.

Isn't that exactly what I'm saying? Lol only 4 games a year, god wish I did only buy 4 a year. I have over 300 games to be played, that's in my steam library, my xbox library, my itunes account. So tell me if I do pirate a game what use will it be, I will never even get to it.

Last year I racked up so many content all my drives and externals was 99% full. I got to a point where that as well became pointless. Time available and content available doesn't match, because I got more and more involved with real life things. To give you an idea I get about 1 - 2 hours a week gaming in even my weekends isn't always totally free.

Lucky that helps with killing of the habit.

Even my music and podcasts is downhill, I've gotten myself that cd Eks Die Ou because I would like to actually own a parrow disc, which I will be getting more of next week, hopefully them stocking the one I'm looking for.

I have not if you really read what I've said say in any way that retail content lost can be replaced with pirated goods. In fact only every once off I did was buying halo 1 of xlive not being able to download it with 5 attempts I got the ISO for the pc, played and finished it. That was only event I ever replaced something I bought with something pirated.

Let me say it again:
1) All my games I have I've bought and too fucking many at that.
2) All games before that I'm replacing even old shit if I get the chance via GOG like unreal 1.
3) All music I buy month to month, that doesn't mean I replaced stolen or burnt with pirated or download when I can't buy them. Heck I've even been to my parents to go and lend their classical music.
3) Movies I, I can't even remember last one I pirated. I actually go and watch them at the cinema.
4) Series yes, Dexter was last one, I'm getting spartacus over just downloading it again. Currently following naruto, not sure what my options is over downloading anime.
5) Even my OS is legit, It's via my MSDN license.

I don't see a problem there, it's exactly what you have stated here unless I'm confused which I doubt
If someone is against piracy and they really do try not to pirate, by all means there is nothing wrong with that and I will even applaud it.

Besides I'd doubt it if you were in my shoes you'd do other wise. Just do a 2-3 years proper development project and you'd very soon start to think through you copy actions.

:edit
I don't even use MS products, I use open office *shrugs*. Even my getright is paid for...

Seriously, guys?

Now that we've gone through everyone's personal approach to piracy in great detail, can we get back to a conversation where we're not flipping each other off, telling everyone to shut up, calling people morons and idiots - and perhaps cut out the antagonistic attitudes altogether?

I can relate ...... in my 20's (early 90's) I was involved in a quite well known SA band and 2 known-in-the-genre bands in Germany and the States and it grated me to see sales hurt by piracy back then.

Not to be an anti mod prick, but the piracy talk has been done to death we all know we are passionate about it so why bring in another thread about it?

I'm really asking this out of not being a dick, but just saying my opinion. It's just as bad as talking middle east over at myb. I hate piracy and don't condone it, I don't like people who condone it or play with it's rules, that is not going to change.

I guess the counter question should be then... Should we never talk about it, I'm not sure.

I know what you mean. I actually shudder each time a Steam sale comes around because it just adds more games to my overly long backlog. And I get a LOT of time to play games weekly, but it still doesn't shorten much. :P

Last year I racked up so many content all my drives and externals was 99% full.

Steam is going to start doing that to me soon. It's already taking up 500gb on my external, and I've still got quite a few games to download, including Empire and Napoleon Total War which takes up about 20gb each.

4) Series yes, Dexter was last one, I'm getting spartacus over just downloading it again. Currently following naruto, not sure what my options is over downloading anime.

I'm not exactly sure, but I think series is more of a grey area. It's not exactly piracy in the same way that recording them on a DVD while they're airing on DVD isn't really piracy.
I could be wrong, of course, but that's the way I understood it.

I thought it through while taking a piss. Next piracy thread I'll just not get involved in, The end. You guys know how I feel about it...

You're a bit late. The discussion has already started taking a turn towards a more civil approach, from all parties involved I dare say.

Initiating group hug in 3...2...1...

See? :P

But I mean it, aside from a rocky start, we're actually having a rather decent conversation now.

The general stance on topics is that everything is open for discussion as long as people stay civil about it. We're not here to baby-sit the forums and say what you can and can't talk about.

That said, this thread isn't here for a piracy talk - it's specifically about CDProjekt's approach towards it, and the resulting action they took etc. So let's talk about that. If you don't want to talk about that - then don't post here.

I think it's a bit silly that we get reported posts about a thread, only to find that everyone, including the post-reporters, are actively perpetuating the content of the posts they're reporting.

On topic - or get out.
