Cell C's Speestick modems for gaming

Wenzdayz

Thread Killer Mk III
I was wondering anyone else here using Cell C to play online with and what are your thoughts on this?

Also i thought it would be a good idea to post any problems you are having with it here as the Mybb sites threads mainly deal with using Cell C just for general internet and downloading.

If you have good signal, it works perfectly! But the problem is that you don't always get coverage!

It works fine as long as you've got decent coverage in your area. Plus you've got seven days to test it before you decide to return it if need be, so give it whirl.

Thats just it i have the modem and have been able to play Black Ops online quite well. Its after the 7 day return period that i have started having problems though. I get decent speeds for about 5-10 min and then the speed just drops.

i did a speedtest last night and i was at one stage able to get a speed of 563kbp.

Yeah works well for me, play WoW and counter strike on pc. Been playing Dead Space 2, Battlefield BC2, Halo Reach online on xbox. No issues. 2 people playing battlefield while someone else plays WoW. But as the rest have said, its all depends an your connection.

Wenz, try moving around a bit to get better signal. I have my stick plugged into a 3G router which had useless signal until I moved it to a nearby window.

Check your signal under the network settings thing as you move around to find the sweet spot.

You can always check the MyBroadband Cell C forum to see if there are any issues: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/forumdi...oadband-amp-Mobile-Internet-HSPA-3G-EDGE-GPRS

They also just launched a customer service monitoring tool which may or may not be of some use: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-Customer-Experience-Monitoring-tool-launched

Finally, from personal experience (I have one of these sticks, but live in an area with no coverage) you can usually get some form of assistance via their Twitter account: http://twitter.com/cellc

I tried going the e-mail support route and from my experience, it's perfectly useless.

I must say, when it works, it works well. Good speeds and ping if you are in a coverage area.

Here is the link to Cell C's dedicated Speedtest server. http://41.157.65.50/

Good luck!

hi James thanks for the help. i am actually following the threads on mybb as well. i just though it might be a game issue or something. Ja have sent 2 e-mails to their customer support with no reply and have also logged a problem on that new monitoring tool (which by the way is actually for dropped calls etc but i took a chance anyway).

I have seen them reply quite quickly on twitter and will post a query to them there and see if i can get some joy from that.

my overall gripe is that it worked so well when i got it but now i have all these disconnects and i am in a coverage area...

We had a similar problem at our offices. The signal went for a ball of chalk one day. If you make enough fuss (we resorted to going through Twiiter - so annoying!) they do get back to you. It turned out that there was a problem on one of the nearby towers and they sent technicians to fix it. It can happen when there is high wind or heavy rain.

ok so i followed Rusty's suggestion to move around with my pc and the speedstick and i must say the signal was better closer to the window and the connection also lasted longer. But it still drops the signal after about 13min and even disconnected completely on 1 occasion.

the thing that bugs me most though is that i can go onto Youtube and the signal is fine but as soon as i try and launch the game through steam the connection drops instantaniously....

and Cell C has as yet also not responded on my twitter query so i will continue making a nuisance of myself.

Ok, have received some good news here.

Cell C have finally answered my tweets and pm's and attended to my issues and are currently busy resolving same as there might actually be a problem with their tower that is keeping my speedstick from preforming optimally. They will be sending out a technician to my house to gather data and to go and check on their towers nearest to my house. This is all said to happen within the next 7 working days!

I have had the speedstick for almost 3 months now and it works like a charm. I play black ops, starcraft 2, modern warfare 2, MOH, BC2 all online and i dont have any problems except for a disconnect every second day or so. Does not really bug me too much. I also have the vodacom 7.2mbs and the cellc one works much much better. The connection of cellc is much more stable and more constant. Cellc all the way. Well done to them. Vodacom better pull up their socks, my 3g upgrade is coming soon. Might move to cellc for all my internet requirments until i decide to get fixed lines.
