Good evening folks,

I'm assembling a midrange/cheap gaming system for my dad as a bday gift, and so far what I've got is the following (all new)

AMD FX6300: 1700
MSI AMD 990FXA-GD80 R1500
Corsair Vengeance 8gb DDR3 ram CL9 1600mhz R800
Seagate 500gb 7200rpm HDD SATA R550
MSI Geforce GTX650Ti PE 1gb R1300
ANTEC NEO ECO 620W PSU R650

I have the case/KB/Mouse/screen

That brings me to a total of: R6500

I'll probably OC the system, using a aftermarket cooler ?any cheap recommendations

Ok so all in all, that is what I'm looking at. Any feedback?

Also, if I had another R500 to spend, where would it get the most bang for the buck?

Upgrade the CPU to a FX8320?
Switch to intel? if so what for combined price of R3000?
Upgrade GPU? Can get GTX660/7850 for R500 more..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Not sure what you consider cheap, but I use this and am happy with it: Hyper 212 Evo

What will he use it for?...
-GPU upgrade for rendering...video work? (Incl. Gaming)
-CPU...for more power :) (Get the 8320 over intel for the money)

Check out the "advis for R5000 system"...many of the same tips will apply.

@OP, what case do you have?
Based on case dimension, you will need to determine the height of the cooler, some coolers stand freaking tall.
Does it have a side panel fan? It could disrupt the airflow of air coolers.

I personally go for closed loop solution because I'm too lazy to set up a WC loop myself. :p
The 120 closed loops can fit in most cases with a 120mm fan slot.

where did you get the price for the board?

Is gox ever coming back? :(

Sorry :cry:hectic day at work, didn't mean to leave everyone answering in the lurch.

Ok lets start at the start
Kwaai: I read great things on that cooler, was seriously considering it if I don't go for water cooling. I really like the idea of playing around with watercooling though.

Rootworm41: Ooh where to start so many comments - Thank you!

1. My dad only games (he is 64). The only other thing he *might* use it for is probably email and typing some word documents/powerpoint presentations.

2. He does play some decent games though, notably everything from Civ - Battlefield

3. Ive read the R5000 advice thread, a few times =-)

4. You reckon a SSD is worth it? smallish one, say 256gb?

Chan0o: Heh dont laugh. Antec Sonata 3 ATX case - piano black. http://store.antec.com/Product/benclosure/sonata-iii-wo-psu/0-761345-45452-0.aspx
It also has an EarthWatts500 psu in it, which btw kicks ass, but I think a 5y old PSU should probably retire

I've seriously considered the Corsair H series for coolers, but seems a bit rough to spend R1k on cooling a R6k system. Not sure yet

JPS: Carbonite

Right so my questions for the night

I can also get a A10-5800k for under R1000 new, and if I pair that with an overclocking board that comes to around R2250-R2400, which knocks around R800-R1000 of the pc price

That will allow me to either get serious cooling for OC the 5800k, or to add another R1000 to the graphics card.

Not sure if that will be a boost over the other systems or not? (Planning on disabling the onboard GPU of the 5800k until AMD sorts its dual onboard GPU + expansion GPU thingy out)

Thoughts?

To answer your question about the A10-5800K, don't. If you're adding a more powerful discrete card, the FX-6300/FX-6350 is the better bet. You've got a solid idea there. If you're looking to spend that R500, I'd say get a bigger hard drive or a newer chassis.

I would get the ssd to run all your games off... My steam games have crap loading times ( I can live with it for now), but in the future I WILL get a ssd
