choosing an uncapped adsl ISP

i didn't know where to post this thread so i just put it in PC gaming since you use your PC with the internet mostly...

that being said... I'm planning to get a new 512 Kb or 1 Mb uncapped line but I'm not sure which i should get... so could u guys (and girls) please suggest good ISPs that give good service and that aren't too pricey either?

Most 512 lines have been upgraded to 1Mb anyways. I'm with Mweb, ok speeds most of the times, but I do sometimes get very low speeds. Think it's R299 for the 1Mb option, excluding line rental.

3) videos on Internet

2) downloading things (but not more than 2 Gb at a time)

1) Online gaming/surfing the web

I would go with MWEB. Most of the other ISP's run off the IS backbone and therefore work based on a very limiting bandwidth management system. MWEB typically only shapes p2p protocols during heavy traffic periods. HTTP is almost always full speed.

Currently with them, but I would also suggest checking out openweb gold.

Some of my friends have Mweb but say Itz crappy.. Could that just be because of heavy downloads?

And what about afrihost...? Anyone know anything about them?

Their uncapped is seriously the suck. I'd take a good bet that when the R1 Honeymoon is over, the draconian shaping will be switched on again. I've done about ±33gb over the w/e so far without trying, rift play was smooth and steam is fast... no mweb fail here yet.

Openweb is the preferred flavor of the month on the uncapped side. Line rental you could either look at a combo or maybe Axxess...they discount line rental.

I'd seriously suggest looking at something capped though as you don't sound particularly cap heavy from the limited info you've provided.

Agreed, Openweb is the other alternative, as long as you take the gold account. Otherwise MWEB is the way to go, baring a few off days MWEB has served me well thus far.

MWEB is not always the best ISP if your playing a lot of online games. Average latency statistics for our gaming servers (www.sahon.co.za) shows that MWEB accounts generally have the highest latency.

It also depends on where you are from, MWEBs service in CPT and JHB differ quite a bit.

I play all my games on my MWEB account without issue.

This was taken on an account that is busy downloading.

Ignore the speed, since like I said it's being downloaded on. What's important is the ping.

I have Mweb 1Mb uncapped. Very happy with it. Only problems I had was with BFBC2 on a few servers but otherwise everything is all good! :)

OpenWeb > MWEB

especially since your no.1 is gaming online. All you need to do is read a couple of pages here

There is a reason why that thread is 200 pages long...

I was wondering if I should go with this. They sent me mail about a promo for 1Mb Gold Uncapped for R349. Think I might consider this when I upgrade to 1Mb in August(after they drop the price)
