Close call

Ron Burgundy
I consider myself as a fairly calculative and safety conscious person and whenever i drive and wherever i drive to my full concentration is on the road and its surroundings and not be distracted by irrelevant schitte (cellphones etc) like most people on the road.

So last night as im dropping of my fiancé at her moms place about 9 ish (not a single person outside in the road), im waiting for her to climb out because she normally always talks for another 10 minutes before getting out. She is someone that is quite naive in a sense that she doesnt believe crime is as bad as most people make it out to be, I on the other hand see everything and everyone as a potential threat, call me paranoid but this is south africa and im not gonna lose my life because i wanted to see or hoped for the best in people.

I spot a white toyota corolla in the mirrors stopping in the road and two guys get out and approach the vehicle, one walking towards the driver side (they were probably not looking for directions), i tell her dont get out and i locked the doors and floored it (i was driving the tucson and not the audi) without panicking so i went around the block (she stays in a circle) and i say to myself if they are going to cut me off im just gonna go straight into them and the impact will hopefully wake the neighbours, but as i come around again the car and the guys were both gone (probably aware that i knew what they were up to).

Now i could have let them take the vehicle, sure its insured and it has a tracker but they rarely just do that, they will shoot or rape the occupants without hesitation.

Call me paranoid but it might have just saved our lives.

Good call.
I live in a farming area so we are always on alert.
Rather safe than sorry.
If their is enough light always look at the guys belt line for any sign of a gun and secondly ankle.
Even a hand on the hip is somebody not comfortable in carrying and will try hide it that way.

Brilliant, utter briliance. You are Jason Bourne!

In SA we are street smart, I tell all friends and family. Trust no one. In these days of GPS, directions are never asked for anymore or it's extremely rare. I strongly believe it is ok to be paranoid, it shouldnt have negative conotations to be so. Infact I heard of a motto employed by some military personal in iraq/afghanistan was "Only the paranoid survive" and thats exactly how I am too.

Just be supremely aware of your surroundings. My father is an old cop and never sits anywhere he cant see entry/exit points. I get a lot of my suspicious activity sense from him.

Its always good to be aware, check your mirrors when dropping people off and dont pull into a driveway until the gate is open to stop getting blocked off. I personally start checking whose behind me from about 3 blocks away to make sure there is no one following. *keep doors lock all the time and only roll windows down when necessary
