Column: PSN probably won't remain a free service

If they adopt a similar system to that of Xbox live where there is a free and a pay for option I have no problem with it. I pay for me Xbox live gold and use it, i do not pay for my PSN and with the exception of the PSN store i never use it. so paying for something I never use is pointless.

If I have to pay a monthly fee to play multiplayer games on PSN... I'd rather sell my PS3. Then it will be back to PC gaming only with all the awesome free online multiplayer I can handle.

MS charges for XBL because they can, not because they need to. The only alternative if you want multiplayer without paying a subscription is to change platforms. Thus people pay.

It's not a case of getting what you pay for, but MS capitalizing on the monopoly they have on their platform.

any1 crazy anoth to give Sony there CC details after this episode of things must get there mind ready. that what i thought of readying about PSN becoming a paid service

Hold on a second... am I the only one here that remembers that the PSN HAS a paid-for service? I had to make sure I'm not looking at an old article?

There is the Playstation plus network already, and this is a paid-for service.... There is also a free version, which I believe will lose some content to the Plus network in the future....

Aaah, unless you all mean that ALL free PSN functionality will disappear? I doubt it, Sony makes a helluva lot more money from games sales etc over this network than they will by making from a subscription service... well I think so....

I'm going under the assumption that you'll need to pay mainly to play online multiplayer much like the x-box

I agree with Raven Gold (oh the horror! :p) and it makes sense that they would do that. Hopefully it will be cheaper than the XBox version though.

Only reason that would be such a "horror" was because it use to be free and look where that ended. As for the mass exodus back to pc gaming... as if. Go back to the launch of every major online shooter in the last year - it has been a complete and utter cluster fuck. Fail Ops was a cock up on PC and PS3, the two free services while the Xbox guys managed to at least get a game or two in without having to wait for patch no. 2 or 3. In my years of paying for my MP on xbox i've never encountered any issues. I know guyz that migrated off of PC COD MW2 and BF BC2 to their console counterparts particularly due to the MP on PC being such a complete and utter cock up. But heck without ya'll on there at least the servers will be quieter, enjoy the epic frag fest, did i say frag, my bad, i meant frustration fest.

Until they actually start implementing something similar on PC....

Blizzard does it with WOW... :p I'm surprised SC2 hasn't gone the same path.

I think the reason it won't happen quickly with all games is the fact that it will have to be the publisher making the call and they all to shit scared pay-for-online will push the masses away from their games, right into the arms of the competitors.

Hey Tarryn!
I see your paid-for-PSN, and raise you "Premium-based Steam"!

Hey, as much as MS is a business, so is Sony. And so is Valve...

It IS coming, just a question of time...

It's not feasible since there are at least 3 competing services on PC that are free already. The first to become a paid service would see a mass exodus. This is what I meant in my earlier comment about MS capitalizing on it's monopoly with XBL. They don't need to charge a fee to deliver a good service, but they do because it's good money and no one else can step in and charge less (on the 360).
