Comic Con SA organisers provide proper details

You guys should really consider merging threads when they're about the same topic.

Anyways, moving on, the sudden switch in direction is rather funny, but the giving female cosplayers only free entry is a bit silly in this day and age ... y'know, for anything that's not a club. I dunno if Mr Organiser expects to see a lot of scantily clad sexy cosplayers getting drunk later in the evening, but I'm not going to hold my breath expecting anything else.

Multiple backtracks are never a good idea ... in the marketing world that shows you're unsure of your product, and an unsure marketer doesn't make sales. And also, way too much secrecy and fuzzy language.

They say they acquired the right to use the Comic Con name. Who did they acquire it from? CCSD doesn't know anything about it. Claiming to be sponsored by Marvel SA when no such entity exists, and then backtracking on that as well.

Someone is attempting to play us for fools. Me no like.
 
This all sounds very dodgy to me. Especially the being sponsored by Marvel SA and now back tracking to say someone is promoting a new comic.
 
This is just idk i feel that the people organizing this are not even apart of a anime group. They dont even know whats going on. I would love to ask them questions about anime/comics and see if they even know what im asking them. then you know they know nothing. ><
 
Has anyone looked at the official site? Utterly useless and not even cool. Not even a shred of info to be found.
And the venue has much to be desired from first impressions: http://goo.gl/maps/qL0nH. On any regular day finding parking in the Waterkant area is a nightmare at best.
 
Lemme add some fuel to the fire - here is Readers Den's official line on it:

Over the last few days there have been rumblings of a comic con SA hosted in Cape Town. We have been flooded with enquiries about this event and the involvement of Readers Den, so we feel we should clarify our position in this regard.

Last week the organisers for this event approached us to participate in South Africa’s first comic con. As a result of this meeting, as well as communication with other interested parties, it is clear that this planned event was nowhere near our expectations of what a comic con is supposed to be – the event is planned for the end of April (completely impossible), the venue can only accommodate 150 people, no info available about invited artists or writers on board, the fact that international FCBD is one week later is disregarded, and no information is forthcoming about exhibitors, participants, sponsors etc.

It should also be pointed out that the event is not sponsored by Marvel USA, but by a division of Marvel UK which publishes selected Marvel comics for the youth market in South Africa. A genuine comic con in South Africa is what we would all dearly want but unfortunately, this is not the way to pull off such an event successfully. We bear the organisers no ill will, but as a result of so many logistical problems, we do not see ourselves participating in the upcoming event.

Hmmm...This sounds pretty dodgy. The concept of having a comic book convention is awesome and much needed, but something needs to be mentioned here: this sounds a lot more like a cosplay competition than anything to do with comic books. No representation from DC/Image/Dark Horse/IDW, no other comic books stores apart from Outer Limits (which in my opinion, isn't the best place to go looking for your books. They don't even have backing boards for their books), and it is a very small venue.

I don't think a lot of cosplayers will be pitching either - many of the girls are very much against any perceived sexism - and the "girls only free entry" reeks of it.

Just park in Cape Quarter...I've never had an issue. The Rockwell also has public parking.

Anyway, this entire thing reeks of fail to me. Something bearing the Comic Con name should be hosted at the CTICC. It's a House can accommodate 150 people...meanwhile 1 400 people have recommended the News24 article on Facebook alone. I'm not saying that that's any indication that 1 400 people are going to rock up to the event, but that does suggest there's a big public interest in it. Not many other articles accrue so many shares.

The problem here is that there's a massive discrepancy between what one would expect at a Comic Con and what attendees are going to get. If the organisers had any passion for Comic Con, I think they would have at least tried to start off with a bang instead of limping on stage with the inaugural event. The main man said it himself - he didn't announce it sooner because he's been too busy with commitments relating to other projects. Surely if he knew the potential of Comic Con SA he would have devoted far more attention to it and would have announced it well in advance? I could be wrong, but I get the impression that this is someone who is looking to make a few bucks by riding on the coattail of the Comic Con name. I therefore question whether it will even happen again next year, because if this one sucks, they're going to have a hard time attracting those who bite the bullet and attend this year.
