THQ and Relic’s Company of Heroes Online goes into open beta next week, so if you haven’t signed up for it yet, now’s the time to do it.

According to the official website, those who participated in the closed beta will have all data wiped clean. Your account will still be active, but all your “Commanders and items” will vanish.

Anyone going to try this?

I was under the impression when this was originally posted that its North America only.

This was MMO'ish?

Nah I don't think so. Still looks like exactly the same game, but now it's free to play.. wtf.

Company of Heroes Online takes the WW2 themed strategy franchise to the next level. Unlike previous titles in the series, COHO is free-to-play and supported through optional micro-transactions. The game retains the same high quality visuals and gameplay elements that earned its predecessors some of the highest scores in the RTS genre. A sense of progression and persistence is provided by allowing players to create unique, customizable commanders. Match making features, and a commitment to game balance make Company of Heroes Online attractive to veterans and new players alike.

I was a huge fan of CoH so I will definitely give this a go.

Why is your source mmohut? :D

Where I read about it.RPS.

A news post on the Company Of Heroes Online website contains this message from Relic: “After an exciting period of operating and testing, we will be closing Open Beta on March 31, 2011 to evaluate the next steps for the Company of Heroes series.” Sounds pretty final. Any cash spent in the game can be used up to that point, and anyone who registered with the game before February 1st can get Company Of Heroes: Gold Edition for $4.99. The message signs off: “We are excited to reveal the next evolution of the series in the near future.”

I shall try to find out a bit more information, but this is starting to look like one free-to-play experiment that didn’t quite work out.
