Consoles are "fundamentally doomed"; so sayeth Lord British

I don't think console gaming will ever really be replaced. In the same way I don't pc gaming will die out. New technology just means new ways of playing games. Many people are more likely to add to the ways they game rather than replace one way with another. And the more options the better - the gamer can decide on what platform suits them best.

Carrying around a 46inch screen, Epic Surround Sound & Mah Comphy Chair is going to Murder my back.... plus the people on the tube wont be happy.

He has a point. I reckon in five years from now we will be having console fanboys attacking mobile fanboys, much like we have the PC vs Console wars currently! Oh the irony!

I would hardly call using that nonsense developed for social network platforms, on a mobile device to boot... "gaming".

There are some epic games on iOS (and Android)

I have Street Fighter II & IV
Infinity Blade I (2 out tomorrow)
Castle Wolfenstein
Jet Pack Joy Ride
Bike Baron
Shadow Gun

Mobile is a powerful medium but it lacks the controls for deep gameplay. A FPS is always going to be less fun on a mobile device simply due to the lack of imput controls, touch screen only goes so far. Anything that has the player navigating a full 3D environment is a mission no matter how well its designed. Here ShadowGun is a brilliant example. Its essentially Gears of War Mobile and while its well designed and pretty the controls let it down, its a good try but especially on mobile phones the screen is just too small. iPad or other larger display tablets is a different story.

I don't think mobile games are replacing or will replace consoles in any kind of meaningful way, what they are doing is replacing handhelds. People no longer see the need to buy and carry around an expensive handheld JUST for gaming when your smartphone has the potential of producing games of a similar quality. We've already seen that iOS + Android games now represent more than 50% of the mobile gaming revenue.

If consoles do get replaced, and I don't see it happening any time soon, it will be by cloud services. If you can game on the cloud it means you are never tied down to a specific platform, you never really need to upgrade your hardware AND games aren't hobbled by trying to make things run on your old hardware.

Plus games on iOS & Android are cheaper that their mobile counterparts.
Now if only we could get Nintendo to release super mario & pokemon on iOS.....

I don't see how something on a tiny, tiny screen can be a substitute regardless of how much processing power can be packed into a mobile gadget. Potentially if LCD glasses can be produced at a reasonable price and offer high image quality, then it would come close. There'd still be the problem of powering it all.

Shant be long before we see integration into phones. Then all we need is a mouse.

These puppies are about R2000 and with quad core cpu's coming to phones... it will be no time before we are jamming bf4 on phones.

“I play most of my games now on my iPhone and my iPad.
That is one data point. Plus its a spectacularly biased data point at that:
he’s now the boss of social gaming developer
Clearly too thick to see that people don't play fckin farmville on consoles....they play MW3 etc.

The mobile form factor is just completely and utterly wrong for high performance gaming. Too expensive, not upgradable, limited by battery power, small screen and worst of all it can't deal well with components that generate heat (like um GPUs).

That is not mobile. Mobile, for me anyways, means I can walk down the street playing or on the train home or waiting in the Q at Burger King.

Interesting idea. I can get on board with that! :D

Technology will do so many things for us...

For more immersion, there is always the fuller HD versions...

Its getting closer but not there yet. I looked at those glasses a few months back, shop just cross the road that sells them, and while they are getting closer to what I want, its not there yet and if you wear prescription glasses (like I do) they are even less comfortable.

Just give it another year or 5... we're getting there with great bounds!

Jeez, I dunno man. This seems just ridiculous. I've played some games on the ipad, and its kak!

I can understand where he's going - but he's too optomistic.
It could maybe get to the point where our mobile devices are getting so powerful they could replace the console, but if that happened it wouldn't just be the console, it would be the PC as well in my opinion. If our cellphones were so powerful that they could go into a docking station (for a larger screen, keyboard, mouse, gaming controller, etc) and run everything we'd want to on a PC/console, then yes, its possible.
But thats still years away, if ever. I'm just not convinced.
