Core i5

I have read one or two reviews on this soon-to-be-available in South Africa processor and have seen that it is going down well with hardware fundis. I think the price is reasonable too considering what one is getting for one's money.

If you were soon to be building a new gaming or audio/video/graphics machine and had budget in the region of R2000 for a CPU, would you
opt for this chip or go the Phenom X4 route?

I'd take the Core i5 on the basis of its gaming performance. :D

The i5 is great, but being forced to buy triple channel DDR3 is not so great. The phenom X4 route is still the cheapest way to go, and they'll likely drop the price soon as well.

Core i5 uses dual channel DDR3, doesn't it?

Yes you're right they use dual channel. That's not so bad then. Still I'd rather get DDR2, it's cheaper.

Hehe yeah, I just don't think that you get the extra performance in proportion to how much more you end up spending. I'm a bang for buck buyer. :)

quick guess between ddr2/ddr3 on same system if possible 5-10% differance, anyways i'm getting 275 and that 2.83 core2quad; seems to be better option going to intel + nv route with cash restrictions.

You see that's the thing about performance. If for example the DDR3 RAM is 5-10% faster then I expect to pay 5-10% more. That however is not usually the case and you end up paying a lot more for less gain in performance. It's not really worth it then, and you're better off getting the slightly cheaper variant while getting your money's worth.

A core 2 quad and 275 will be a awesome rig btw. :)

I see that DDR3 is not as expensive as it once was.

Still, 2Gb of DDR2 800 costs less than 2Gb of DDR3 1333 [by about R100, I think], so
for now, DDR2 remains the value-for money choice.

Not sure if the performance increase from Core2Quad for 5i warrents the cost, I'm holding out for a major breakthrough or something
