Hi Guys

IMO Gamers knows what the best phone out there is at the moment, so I'm posting the question to you...

I'm due for an upgrade soon, what phone is the best to get. Taking Applications, OS, Connectivity, Battery Life etc into consideration.

Currently my thoughts are between:
iPhone 4 (Lowest on list)
HTC Desire Z (If available by then)
Black Berry Torch
Samsung Galaxy

Please don't slander phones here :) I want to know how everybody is experiencing said phones and the pros and cons of the phones.

Why is the Iphone 4 on the lower end of the list?

I would Say either the Iphone, The Galaxy or the new Samsung Nexus S.

Samsung Nexus S?? Or Google Nexus S? Forgot to add that one to the list :)
I heard more complaints around iPhone in general than the other phones. But i am open to be convinced.

IPHONE IMO 3GS or 4 ! Applications, OS, Connectivity, Battery Life etc into consideration.

Applications - The Most available (have u seen all the schitte on the itunes store)
OS - is ok , ios 4 is pretty good imo
connectivity - okish, you have, 3g, edge, wifi etc.
If you dont use it as a touchscreen gaming machine, then yes longer than a day.

Dont let it fall, replacing a screen cost an arm, a leg and a testicle !

I think its called Google Nexus S but its made by samsung.

I don't have a Iphone, I am a bit of an android fanboy. I have heard many good things about the Iphone though and the demo models i've played with have been of great build quality and a pretty straight forward interface.

iPhone 4, no contest:

1. Almost 99% of bought apps worldwide are from the App Store. Plus, there are a shitload of new ones every month, not to mention the amount of big developer support (e.g. Eidos, Gameloft, iD, Chillingo, etc.).

2. iOS is still the slickest and most responsive OS I've used. The Galaxy S isn't bad though but it still feels sluggish after cruising along on an iPhone 4.

3. iPhone 4 has the highest spec battery life, and I can confirm from personal usage that it's a definite upgrade from the 3GS.

4. Nothing comes close to the Retina display. The Galaxy S tries hard in this department, and sure the contrast ratio is quite good, but the colours are ridiculously over-saturated and the resolution is visibly inferior.

I know I sound like a fanboy here but remember that all the above points are facts, not opinions ;)

I'm also up for an upgrade in two weeks and looking at mostly the same phones: iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S and Sony Ericcson Xperia X10.

Go check on GSM arena, there is a pretty cool comparison between the Galaxy and the iPhone. After reading through that I am rather leaning towards the Galaxy. iPhone is definitely out for me purely because of iTunes, I despise iTunes and I will never ever in my whole life use it again if I can help it.

I see Rustpuppet says the iPhone's screen is better, but that gsm arena comparison disagrees. According to them the Samsung's Super AMOLED beats it. Also the Samsung has support for DivX and Xvid which I don't think the iPhone does. The Samsung also beat the iPhone in the music department, which to me is the most important thing I'm looking for in a new phone. The fact that you can just plug it into any USB port and copy songs over is also a big win for me, like I said, I DESPISE iTunes.

I am so glad to hear i am not the only one. God i hate Itunes, it is the one thing stopping me from going Iphone.

i would go for the Galaxy S or the Nexus. the galaxy S is in my opinion a lot like the iphone at a cheaper price tag. i dont own 1 myself but would have gotten that had it come out when i was able to upgrade....

Galaxy S to be honest. The iPhone is nice, genre defining and all, but, iTunes.
Not the X10, I have it, SE is completely screwing over the users, you won't see any version newer than 2.1, and we waited a year to be upgraded from 1.6.
BlackBerry is cool for unlimited browsing and email, but if that's all you're going to use it for, it's app support isn't quite there yet.

The only way to test this is to see for yourself. I've compared my iPhone 4 side-by-side with the Galaxy S and the Retina display is clearly superior. The AMOLED is very rich though but, as I said before, the over-saturation and inaccurate colour reproduction are a deal-breaker for me.

The Samsung also beat the iPhone in the music department, which to me is the most important thing I'm looking for in a new phone.

The Samsung beat the iPhone? Um, not from what I can see:

GSM Arena said:
The iPhone 4 is also the handset with the cleanest audio output we have seen and one of the loudest, too (when using headphones). The Galaxy S audio quality is great but not iPhone 4-perfect.

I'm also not sure why all the hatred for iTunes. Sure, it's not as nippy as Winamp, but it integrates brilliantly with the iTunes Store and works a charm when managing your apps and music.

Also there are plenty of other programs with iPhone support, so citing iTunes as a reason not to go the iPhone route is a bit of a moot point.

I'm not clued up on the technical side of things, I just posted what I read on gsm arena. Search for the Galaxy S and then you will find a comparison between the two, that's where I read it. It's in no way my opinion as I haven't ever used any of the two phones myself.

My hatred for iTunes comes from when I had an iPod, I hate the fact that you can only use that crap excuse for software to add songs to the device. iTunes wiped my iPod clean countless times and eventually I got so pissed of that I smashed my iPod against my desk (yes, I'm serious).

What the lad said. My Self and the wife each have an ipod and attempting to sync two different ipods is a fsking nightmare. If it doesn't wipe all my downloaded apps its leaves me audiobook less 10000miles from my audiobook.
The only reason people use itunes is coz for the most you dont really have another choice.

Go for an Android based phone. The Samsung seems a good choice. Also, if you root it, you can get rid of default apps, you can OC it (woo!) and make the battery life last longer. Plus, there is much more customization that you can do with it. I have looked at the iPhoneX and it was a bit meh for me.

Here is a link to that comparison.

BTW, I was talking about the music player, not the sound quality. I'm pretty sure I won't even be able to notice the difference in sound quality between the two. If you scroll just a bit down from the part you qouted you will see that the iPhone gets 8/10 and the Samsung gets 9/10. Also, the iPhone uses iTunes. ;)

Galaxy S :D

im a galaxy s user and i wont go to any other phone, lots of apps for it too,

Got mine on contract for like 250 a month

just youtube iphone vs samsung galaxy both has its pros and cons but in the end they pretty even

Hey dude. I don't usually post on the forum anymore unless I feel I have something really valid to say, and in this case I have to give you my opinion since I work for cellular telecoms company and know alot about the handsets.

From the list that you've given I would say you have 2 real options on your list. Either the Blackberry (which means you need to pay for the monthly service option to enable all features but it's apparently worth it) or the iPhone 4. The blackberry is nice and it's also a bit cheaper - but I think you might get bored of it sooner rather than later.

Don't listen to people who immediately bash the iPhone4. Unless you haven't been to a store and physically played with one for a while, don't make up your mind just yet. Lots of people bash the iPhone because they're uninformed and even worse, most of them have never even owned an iPhone. They simply bash the product because of stuff they read in international news and try to be "cool" by bashing Apple.

Trust me on this - The iPhone4 is a proper smartphone. It has some limitations like all phones do, but what it does, it does WELL. So well in fact that it does it better than most other phones. So please - give it a chance before you submit it to the "bashing corner".

As for the Samsung Galaxy S - STAY AWAY FROM IT

I had a Galaxy S on order and it was delayed time and again by massive stock shortages. I was quite peeved about it but it was for a reason. The BRAND NEW Galaxy S is being revealed in February and it sports upgrades in ALL sections. Thus, if you're going to buy a Galaxy S now you're going to sit with a phone that is severely outdated in a month's time.

Did I forget to mention that Galaxy S owners have STILL NOT received the Android 2.2 upgrade? That's right! And when it does come out (maybe in April), you'll need to go to a service centre to have it upgraded as it will no longer be offered over the KIES application (as it was promised a year ago!).

So please, the Galaxy S is not a smart choice. Especialy not when you consider it's very close to the price of an iPhone 4.

Out of a LOT of experience I can tell you now: stay away from the Galaxy S (it's about to become obsolete). Stay away from HTC because their support and upgrades are pretty poor in South Africa.

Look at the Blackberry or the iPhone4. As for a Nokia handset...LMAO.

edit: you might get a lot of people urging you to look at the Galaxy S and they have valid arguements like "Android is awesome" etc. That's true and I agree, Android rocks. I currently run a hacked Android 2.2 ROM on my HTC HD2 and it's pretty good. But when it comes to the Galaxy S you need to realize that it's still on Android 2.1 which has some pretty big bugs which are only addressed in Android 2.2. Then, when you maybe eventually get your Android 2.2 update - you'll notice that Android 2.3 is already available and you're STILL a version behind. To top that off, by the time you get the Android 2.2 upgrade the Galaxy S2 will be out and about - making you look silly - AGAIN!

At least with an iPhone you get proper updates (most of the time) and Apple makes a point of looking after people with older hardware. The latest upgrade in iOS4.2 made massive improvements to the iPhone 3G! It's a handset that is 2 generations old already but STILL gets attention. Neither Samsung, nor HTC nor Nokia does stuff like that.

On an application front there is also something you need to consider before saying "Apple sucks". It's true that on the Android market you get a lot of apps for free which you have to pay for on iTunes, but the quality of the apps on iTunes is a LOT better due to proper quality control being in place. The Android Market is absolutely littered with dodgy applications - so it's a minefield at best.

And for my closing comment: Have you SEEN the iPhone4's display yet with your own eyes? If that doesn't grab you - then nothing will.

You seem to make a very valid argument, but as for my personal choice I think I will still take the Galaxy S (if they have stock when I go for my upgrade), otherwise it will be the Xperia or an Aino. You see I really have a problem with iTunes and I try to avoid it, and anything similar, like the plague. I don't really care about whether or not I have the latest version of Android, all I want is a phone with a decent web browser and video capabilities and (most importantly) a good, user friendly music player. The only reason I'm looking at these high end phones is because I can get them on my contract without having to pay in any money anyway.
