Darkfall

It depends who you talk to...some praise it, others loathe it. I guess the only way to really know is to try it myself!

Not to be nasty Lydon, but man you need to stick to a MMO. You seem to try everything but not play the vast bulk of them. Personally me thinks you are seriously burnt out on the genre.

That's a valid thing to wonder, and in answer to it:

I'm not burnt out at all. It's by far my favourite genre, and nothing remotely comes close to it. I'll always be passionate about it. Suggesting that because I've tried so many I'm burnt out on the genre is similar to saying that because person X has bought a large number of games for their PC, and continues to buy yet more before finishing the ones they have first, they're burnt out on games.

That being said, the reason I don't actively play the vast majority of them is because I treat each MMO as a single player game...I like to give each and every one a good chance, but if a game fails to captivate me, I'm not going to stick around and play it just for the sake of it. Similarly, I'm not going to actively continue to play a game I've played thousands of hours of if I'm bored of it, either. MMO's have a lot in common, but there's a lot to differentiate each game too. It's about finding that perfect balance of features and mechanics. The only three games that have been able to grab my attention for hundreds of hours are Guild Wars, World of Warcraft and Eve Online. Other than that most games are pretty much more of the same. I have the idea of what would be my perfect MMO in my mind, and I intend to find it :)

However, if something about an MMO catches me interest - new or not - I'm definitely not going to deny it a chance. For all I know it could be the next game that captivates me and provides thousands of hours of entertainment for years to come.

Yeah I can understand what you are saying. I was just wondering because I have spoken /dealt with many MMO burnouts who were doing a similar thing as you before they realized they needed a break.

The awesome thing is that often even from a bad-mediocre MMO, one can easily get more hours out of it than most action titles on the market. Quite often however I have found that the real pay-offs in these games only comes near, or at the endgame (that is if its a theme park level driven MMO).

Personally I like focus in what I do. I like only playing one MMO at a time, focusing on one character, and getting it to max with great gear. That is not to say people cannot get enjoyment in many different ways, and I can respect that.

I was just curious about your MMO habits, and I did not mean any of it in a negative way.

Back on topic. Tell me how Darkfall goes, more specifically after the initial joy of a new game wears off. I do not know how many times a game seemed so WTFZOMGAWESUM!!1 initially, before I realized that it sucked when I got into the meat of it.

I've been playing Darkfall for a while now. Its definitely the "Demon's Souls" of MMOs, extremely unforgiving, the world is ruthless and cutthroat. The ingame community is very cool, but its normally that way when a game has a niche subscriber base. That doesn't mean they won't kill you without hesitation though but they'll probably strike up a conversation after dry looting your corpse =)

There are a few things I think hold Darkfall back from Sandbox greatness. Most importantly, there just aren't enough toys to play with. The most fully fleshed out features in the game are catered pretty much completely towards PvP (clan warfare/sieges/naval combat/politics/alliances), very little caters towards just social interaction (think UO). Second, is the game is very VERY grindy to say the least, I don't believe I have ever played a game where it was so incredibly slow to noticeably raise your skills and its a very common complaint on the game's boards.

If you can overlook that , have the stomach and patience for easily the most ruthless game on the market, Darkfall will probably grow on you fast. I could go into vast detail if you want me to, but its probably worth trying out anyway. As you said, some people love the game, others hate it.

They have a 1 dollar trial coming up. Interesting. Not sure if that'll be enough to entice me to give it a shot, but who knows.

I just need to somehow get the 7GB client before I try it :D

That is what is holding me back.

Normally I could download such a thing, but now my internet cap is taking a beating since I lost my ADSL that I cannot afford to. Also with so many games coming out recently I am also spending lots of my cash on them which again limits how many gigs I can buy. Ooh, also the recession and how it hurt my overall spending habits.

My case is having to re-install/update everything on my PC...potentially twice now. Sigh.

Now I see in the Mortal Online thread this is a 11gig download!? Wow, that bites. No way I am going so far out of my way for a game I very well may hate.

It is sad that we have these download limitations :(

I have read quite a bit about the game but I don't see it pulling me from LOTRO, I don't have the time to invest in this type of game.
