Demon's Souls Spiritual Successor Announced! Prepare yourself for Dark Soul!

Demon's Souls was a hard, hard game. Its spiritual successor doesn't sound any easier — even with it's brand new title.

Previously the game sported the working title "Project Dark", but according to the latest issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu, the game is now called "Dark Souls". Spiritual successor, perhaps, but the world and the story are unrelated to Demon's Souls.

Demon's Souls was a PS3 exclusive, while medieval fantasy Dark Souls is for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

The game will have large areas that can be explored, so if players see, for example, a field in the distance, then they will be able to make their way there and have a look around. However, players will not be provided with a complete map in this open world, but only a marker that shows where they currently are. The entire world is conjoined, and there isn't a "hub" like in Demon's Souls that linked the five different worlds. Areas won't be only be horizontally expansive, but also vertically so. Thus, the focus on exploration is increased in Dark Souls.

Compared to Demon's Souls, Dark Souls will allow more freedom in how players play. When players create their character, their character will not be class-based. The game offers a wide variety of different weapons (and weapon animation) as well as spells and in-game items. Players are invited to fully explore their own play style — as opposed to having an assigned one.

Online-wise, the game has online play that's similar to Demon's Souls with co-op play and versus play. In the online mode, which won't have dedicated servers, players can see where other players died and leave messages. There is also "mutual roleplaying", which will be explained in greater depth at a later date.

Dark Souls sounds easy? It's apparently not. The developers are trying to make something as challenging as Demon's Souls — and just as rewarding for players. As with Demon's Souls, the themes are "learn from one's mistakes and take delight in discovery". The developers are happy that Demon's Souls was so well received aboard, and Dark Souls is slated for release this year in both Japan and the West.

Oh HELL YEAH!

This is gonna be the SHIT!!! I just hope it does't release too close to some of the other RPG's this year.

I didn't spot a release date but Hope its not too soon, I still need to finish Demon's Souls... maybe ill get dug into that after dead space.

I also hope the co-op is a little different from DS. I want to choose who I play with and be able to communicate properly.

It says there it's slated for release sometime this year.

Whenever it does come out it there is a high possibility that it will clash with some other RPG as this year is (thankfully) full of them: The Witcher 2, Two Worlds II, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, Hunted: The Demon Forge, Cursed Crusade, Kingdoms of Amular: The Reckoning, LOTR War in the North, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dungeon Siege 3 and Trinity: Souls of Zill (might have missed one or two).

As for the co-op, I concur. It would be a good thing if you could join your friend's session and vice versa even though I feel the lack of ability to do so in DS adds to the atmosphere.

It did yes but most of us play co-op to play with friends, not strangers.

I loved Demon's Souls but, the only element I felt was missing was some kind of immersing story. There are so many ways they could "flesh" out the world and its happenings, and they did not, which was sad. Either way, I guess, gameplay is king, and Demon's Souls had that.

Isn't that a staple in JRPGs? that we westerners dont "get" the story. It is also the one point in which I found DS terribly lacking. A more fleshed out story would have been interesting. Its going to be interesting to see how the 1 big open world thing will work in Dark Soul.

Demon's Souls really can't be classed a JRPG. It draws heavily on Western influences to the point I would think it was some kind of obscure European RPG to be honest (and yes European games have heavy Western influences in them in most cases).

Most JRPGs usually have a lot of exposition and such, but can contain very strange and imaginative stories. Demon's Souls had, well, nothing! Besides the opening parts mainly, you had little to go on. Even if there were books to read, and a journal that unlocked lore it would have been better.

Anyways, I am amped for this title!

I love the fact that you can jump from up high to attack foes below you. Old news is general but new news in Demon's Souls aghem... Dark Souls
