Diablo 3 beta f&f have started

@fayainz

Nice one! Please let us know ASAP what the latency is like and if it's playable from ZA. Thanks! ;)

I put up a quick vid to check out, you can see the lag experienced and a few tid bits of gameplay etc.

Enjoy

The video wasn't cropped/resized correctly, I'll fix it if I upload anymore vids.

Thanks for upping that vid fayainz.

How stable is your connection? Do you experience similar lag in other online games?
The slight delay in picking things up or using spells/abilities doesn't bother me much.
But when you start popping around the place like that, must get really frustrating.

Lately not very stable I will admit, I'm suffering from a latency problem that occur's afterhours and on weekends due to my Exchange being over subscribed and they are aware of it. Typically my latency is pretty decent but the last 3 weeks it's been terrible for most games in the evenings. I will try grab some footage when my latency is more stable.

Typically I have about 120ms from my house to the exchange, which is pretty sad.

To answer your question tho, there is a slight delay with looting, spell casting as expected, the jumping around is just due to my internet issues and packetloss, I hope to capture some gameplay when it's not so choppy.

There is no ways I would be able to play a game like Diablo 3 with that kind of lag, I would either throw my PC out the window or snap the disc in two. Would just wait for someone to crack shit so I can play proper single player by myself on my pc without lag and without blizzard have to hold my hand making sure I'm not cheating.

I have exactly the same problem, my exchange is overloaded and congested. 6pm onwards and on weekends my latency starts climbing from the acceptable 10ms local ping to 150ms vomit ping. Its worrying me for when DIII comes out. Our exchange is due for upgrade Nov/Dec, but let's face it, this is Telkom here, realistically I can expect my ping to go back to 10ms 24/7 somewhere round 2050.

Thanks for posting that video (and grats for getting in Beta!) but eish yah, it looks pretty laggy. Not gonna be fun to play like that at all in SP :(

If it's any consolation, I know that all beta players have to connect to the US servers, and we should have somewhat better ping to EU in final release, but as you guys mention, we can't account for all the variability along our traceroute or most tellingly, the incompetence of Telkom.

Either lots of people are going to pirate this game (if someone manages to get a decent server emulated) or Blizz are going to crack and somehow patch in a SP mode similar to SC2 (connects to authenticate but play is all localized).

I would prefer to see a StarCraft II model for the singleplayer, however the game is designed to allow friends to jump into your game at any point and time, which could have led to a P2P model but from Blizzard's point of view a P2P model is somewhat insecure and they cannot control the "game experience". In our case in SA, a P2P model may work better...

they cannot control the "game experience".
I think you meant to say they can't force you into their auction house pool. I mean why would you want to pay real money for an item if you could just use a trainer and give it to yourself in SP.

But hey, they are doing this 'for the gamers', right....right?

Thanks for the upload. Here's to hoping that it's just your line that is being difficult.. because I won't play the game like that. It would drive me insane. :(

fayainz - thanks for the upload it's good to see something local.

Unfortunately it confirms my worst fears but at the same time I kind of expected it. Sure, it's beta now but a F&F is hardly a stress test so I suspect the closed beta opened to a select few public participants (thousands, a hundred thousand?) will reveal even more problems pains with higher latencies. Then of course at release time I don't want to know what their servers are going to be like (I remember from past WoW expansion releases when I still played it...Horrible!). I've seen a few posts on their beta forums regarding latency (some chap from Israel was playing with a 1600ms to 3000ms latency saying it was "unbearable") and I can't say that I'm as optimistic as I was last week (then again I'm generally a pessimistic chap).

Ah well...maybe soon we'll get better connections that'll allow us to play it...either that or we just move on to other games until we can finally play future blizz games again (I hope the SC2 expansions don't go the same way...at least for the SP campaigns!).

Ah yes, WoW launch days....as you say D3 will be just like that, rush home with box, install game, sit staring in frustration at a queue as the servers strain under the load :)

I'm a bit confused as to what is going on. Incgamers had a promising news item last week about the fact that Blizz were trying some new network code. What I took from it is that combat, monster placement etc are handled by the client while drops, NPC and vendor interactions were handled by the server. This means combat was pretty seamless, as in feeling like a SP game, while the loot drops etc were subject to lag. This sounded good to me, but now it seems that was either mis-reported or it's been removed from the beta.

I played WoW for a number of years, quit about 2 months after Cataclysm launched, and I was pinging about 250 to the European servers which was playable but still less-than ideal.

I think the high ping players are experiencing has to do with the fact that they're still working on a bunch of things, surely the latency can't differ too much from WoW once D3 is released, right?

What ISP are you using? WA has been having lots of problems of late, especially with packet loss issues. They blamed my exchange, but I didn't have any problems when switching over to another ISP.

Looks like they have fixed it now, though.

Anyways, to be fair; packet loss with any online game is usually unplayable, no matter what your latency is (local or international) or how good the netcode is.

I'm using Axxess uncapped, I've also tried a MWeb uncapped account as well as my standard Telkom shaped account and very recently Afrihost unshaped.
All ISP's show no difference sadly, and my traceroute shows the problem is on the second hop (or the first host that is outside of my network, being the exchange).

:(

GZ on getting into the BETA fayainz! Sorry that its a less that ideal experience though.

To be fair, we don't really know a lot yet... There have been posts of guys with high latency (as there always will be) and some with good news regarding the "feel" of the game.

What we do know is the BETA server is in the US, which normally has worse latency for us SAffers vs EU servers (anyone know if there are going to be EU BETA servers?).
We also know that fayainz has exchange issues, and thus we cannot base all our latency / lag issues on this.

Everyone calm down, and hopefully more of us will get into the BETA.

Yes, please don't take my footage of the beta as the current state of the game, I am getting feedback from my other friends from SA that are playing in the BETA and hopefully I can get some vid's or get them to comment on this thread.

There is still hope. Its usually not the exchanges that get overloaded, but the mini-exchanges that 'makes the last mile copper' shorter. You just need to be adamant and complain to Telkom. My friends' line got fixed after a few complaints; they simply upgraded the mini-exchange overnight and it fixed all his problems.
