Diablo 3 Beta - Feedback :}

All in all, a great game, it seems.
The only problem is that simply being great won't cut it for Diablo 3. It has to be the sequel to Diablo 2, which is still one of the greatest games of the PC Gaming era. And in a time when sequels like Portal 2 can take an existing formula, run with it and add so much more to a sequel making it almost better than the original, simply releasing a great sequel isn't gonna cut it.
I feel that the areas are slightly too limited and narrow for a Diablo game, and although the skill trees are a newish take on the system, having more options would go a LONG way with the gaming crowd.
In the end, I don't feel that this game deserves R100 more of my money than any other game out there, ESPECIALLY not when it requires always-on internet even for single-player

You played an hour at the very beginning of the game and say its too limited and narrow?

There are 4 screenshots from Areas not in the Beta.

More options on the Skill trees?

Lets look at the Barbarian's skills.

Barbarian has 22 Skills.
7 Active Skills
15 Other Skills that fill the 4 slots on your UI.

Each Skill has 5 Skill runes which can completely change the skills its assigned to. That is a shitload of choice. In D2 you could have 2 active skills and a few passives. How limiting was that?

Judging the game based solely on what you experienced in the BETA which was just that a BETA that most people could burn through in less than an hour, in a game that could see you spend 20+ hours on the main campaign alone that is next to nothing.

@DathRiven
You comments extrapolating everything about the game based on the beta is like playing D2 up till where you kill Bloodraven and then passing judgement.

As for too few skills, you obviously aren't really aware of how the system works. When you compare it to Diablo 2, D3 literally has billions of combinations per class (2 141 851 635 just for the Barbarian) and that is without the passive abilities.

The statement in bold proves you know a bit too little about D1, D2 & D3 atm.
If you talking options then D3 has an insane amount more.

Rather say you prefer the old cookie cutter skill point tree way instead of the new way.

Btw I also liked the skill tree way, but I have to say after actually playing the beta I enjoy having tons more options, being rewarded with something new every level and it actually being usable later in the game instead of just saving points to dump into 2 later spells to spam.

"I feel that the areas are slightly too limited and narrow for a Diablo game" Clarify that a bit would you please?

You also don't need to buy the game, so I guess you are sorted then.
I personally think it's work R400+ more than any other game out atm and that's also why I am buying the CE version, but that's just me and my opinion currently :)

*** Aw missed the last page, well said OmegaFenix & MOnk

Finally got to play a bit of the Beta yesterday morning at work then on my own PC from something to 6 till half past 6 then I wanted to create a Witch Doctor and bam, server full... 30mins to go till Open Beta end so I gave up retrying. Was pretty awesome. Pre-Order tomorrow.

Hehehe. Loving the flamewar this started... SnowWar, thanks for the feedback. I can work with what you said :) as for the rest, no, I've actually played the beta and stand by my opinions, but they're subjective ones. I don't mean to change how you guys feel about the game, but the thread asked for our opinions on the beta and I gave mine.

Having more or less options isn't subjective, Diablo 3 has definably more skill combinations than Diablo 2. The only argument you can really have on the topic is about permanence and the choice of stats increases but that isn't what you've been talking about.

Also I'm not sure you know what a flame war is if you think this is it. :wtf:

Gotta say, I'm feeling the love today... MOnk, it was merely a turn of phrase. As for my original post, I never thought it'd get this amount of attention, so I didn't word it the way I meant it properly. But thanks for being such a nice guy and not, say, hammering every single detail of what I posted instead of just going with "Well, think what you think, but I like the game."
Anyway, lemme get back to whatever it was that I was doing before I got trapped in this discussion. Over and out!

Well this is a forum, where people discuss things, discussions often have contradicting opinions which is great that's what makes them interesting. However, the way I view opinions is that if you can't engage in a reasonable discussion about your opinion then that opinion wasn't worth expressing.

Maybe that's just the scientist in me, I value critical thinking even if that thought leads you to the conclusion that your original opinion was incorrect.

Sticking your head in the ground and saying "well I shouldn't have said anything" just seems silly.

I kinda agree with DarthRiven to an extend BUT

I don't like to roam around endless and kill hordes and hordes and hordes of enemies. Some times it feels too much when I just have to explore and explore and explore and kill and kill and kill and kill.

HOWEVER

I miss uber kaduber character choices. I want to set each attribute, I want to select spells and skills and sub skils and spells, but we all know that is not D3 so I'm going to going expect that either. If I want that level of experience I'd go play PnP DnD or something close to it.

Though I'd guess that main reason for moaning and bitching from DarthRiven is... the whole b.net thing. Everything else is padding for justification. We live in RSA we don't live in USA and that is not blizzards fault or problem. If everyone just voted correctly and kept the fight going of activism we would have a very different picture.

That in itself is not an excuse to cry and ask for the bottle. You have more than enough to make due with what you have and still enjoy diablo 3. If you don't then get of your arse and try something, but we don't want to try, we rather want to /like and let someone else do it...

I don't know if someone has posted this in this thread before, if so, then sorry.
But I think everyone on this forum should go and read this:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/3811455085?page=1

It is a long read, but worth while. This guy explains everything brilliantly.

Great post indeed. Will be cross-posting this errywhere yo. Nice find Blazzok. A full blown primer article for anyone wanting to know things have progressed from D2.

Yeah quite interesting see the mechanical differences since most of these problems weren't readily observable to most people.

Sorry, not going to read 38 pages, so forgive if already mentioned...

1) Always on Internet bit of a bummer, but it uses about 5MB per HOUR (and works fine via 3G)

2) Raided with a friend (actually we skyped and discussed what to do and where to go) - was lots of fun

3) The download at 3 to 8 Gb is a bit of a bummer. So either buy the DVD if downloads are slow / capped

I had the opportunity to quickly test the game during the Open Beta week-end and i'm kinda doubting.
Game itself looks great but I had a bad online experience (Questing with level 11 when i'm level 4.. what's the point..)

I was too young for Diablo and Diablo 2 so maybe it was the same here, but I was a bit disapointed by that.
Again; other than that game looks great.

Did you have someone who is Lvl 11 in you game while you where lvl 4, would you mind explaining a bit more? If nothing else you will level fast. Just remember you dont have to play with other people, unless you open your game to the public and only people in your friendlist cant jump into your game.

GOD I feel old now.

According to Kotaku the number of players it takes to break Diablo 3's Beta Server is...... 300K.

Source

Wow that is a lot. Hopefully with them having an open beta to test the release will be smooth. They should have capacity for twice what they estimate the player numbers will be just to be safe !

@OmegaFenix lol, I know the feeling :)

@Sillicur I'm sure that was the idea. I guess it will work similar like WOW, but not totally. Login server(s) to get in, do your toon thing and then instance servers for playing the game with or without friends. Obviously there will be a sh#tload more on release both in the US & EU, but the main idea of this open beta weekend was to take the core setup server(s) and stress test the sh#t out of it and then improve on it and the code for the 15th.
