Diablo III accounts reportedly hacked, gold and gear swiped

Bleak that this sort of stuff is already happening, but nice to see that although Blizzard doesn't have much to say they do still however offer some form of protection against this kind of thing.
 
On the bright side, if they hack my account, all they will get is some crappy gear and no gold. The hacker would probably feel so sorry for me that he would deposit gear and gold. :P
 
Blizzard has a lack of service which is dismaying. My starcraft 2 experience was dismal, as my game could never log in. Also, I have to connect to the internet every time I could log in (thus no offline play) but the maps didn`t want to download. I needed a programme to download the maps
 
We've been taking the situation extremely seriously from the start, and have done everything possible to verify how and in what circumstances these compromises are occurring. Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person's account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password. While the authenticator isn't a 100% guarantee of account security, we have yet to investigate a compromise report in which an authenticator was attached beforehand.

I'm inclined to believe it, most people are very lax with their home network security. Their account details and passwords were probably stolen some time ago, now with the release of Diablo III, the thieves are making use of those details. It could have been stolen in a multitude of ways. A flat out weak password, stolen from another compromised site with the same password (most people use the same password for everything), ye olde' traditional keylogger from installing garbage etc. etc.

If your Battle.net account has been compromised, there's a good chance whoever got into your account could get into your Facebook, Gmail, online banking etc.

I always suggest a complete format, re-install and change of passwords across the board to people who get any of their accounts hacked.
 
Authenticator works for me...

Downloaded the one for Android... For my Battle.net account and for my Google account.

Although I have not bought Diablo 3 yet...
 
Now if there was at least an offline option many wouldn't be forced to worry about things like this.

You joke, I had something very close to that happen to my one WOW account back in 2009.

Back then I use to have 5 active accounts for multi-boxing, but did not use em actively as we where busy in heavy raid progression. One of my accounts got hacked and used as a Mule. I only found this out one day when I taught its time to go get some arena gear for the 3 toons on that account.

Found over 200 000 in gold and a crap load of flasks on the toon, realized it been compromised and activated added the authenticator. It almost felt like Xmas.

Just glad it wasn't one of my raid toons that got hit or even my banking account... would probably have quit wow sooner if that was the case.

In my case, I highly doubt it. I use different passwords for each account/site I use. What I did find odd is that they only compromised the account that was static but active. At the time, when I spoke to other people that had similar compromises, it all but confirmed to me that there was some leak at blizz as only static accounts where compromised for mule use.

As for Home PC security, I was running Linux at the time and never connected without proper Firewalls in place.

Well, while this thread is up here I probably need to download Diablo 3 sometime and check that all my items are still there. I got an email last week from Blizzard, saying my account has been locked for suspicious activity. No idea what that's all about but I wouldn't be too worried if they did take all my stuff. Not like I had anything of worth anyway.

I suspect account theft/hacking will probably increase dramatically in the next few months as people try to make a last quick buck off the AH before it goes out of commission. If you haven't already, I'd suggest you enable the SMS authenticator for your B.Net account.
