DICE on why you can’t shoot civilians in Battlefield 3: “people will do bad”

You won’t be able to kill civilians in Battlefield 3. Executive producer Patrick Bach explains why in an interview with RPS, in which he voices his worries that players given the choice to commit violent crimes against virtual innocents will more often take the darker path.

“If you put the player in front of a choice where they can do good things or bad things, they will do bad things, go dark side,” says Bach, “because people think it’s cool to be naughty, they won’t be caught…”

“In a game where it’s more authentic, when you have a gun in your hand and a child in front of you what would happen? Well the player would probably shoot that child,” he adds.

“We would be the ones to be blamed. We have to build our experiences so we don’t put the player in experiences where they can do bad things.”

It’s a very different approach to that shown by Infinity Ward when they designed the controversial “No Russian” mission in Modern Warfare 2, which gave players the opportunity to mow down innocent civilians in an airport.

“Me personally, I’m trying to stay away from civilians in games like BF because I think people will do bad,” Bach continues. “I don’t want to see videos on the internet where people shoot civilians. That’s something I will sanitise by removing that feature from the game.”

Bach also stresses that DICE’s decision to exclude civilians from Battlefield 3 doesn’t mean that they aren’t taking their depiction of war seriously. Instead, they’re trying to pursue a more adult sense of authenticity.

“We are trying to do something that is more mature. Mature not being gore –some people confuse the two. That’s childish actually, to want more blood,” he says.

Battlefield is out on October 25 in the US, October 27 in Australia and October 28 in Europe.

ROFL how absurd

I see dead people... No sorry, this is not a real wargame. I see only dead soldiers....

Flippen common redenasie wat daai aap het. Dis n game.

LOL Jack

I think it's more a "political" reason that they don't want to be sued because som kid played BF3 and then went on a killling spree and everyone blames BF3 for it.

I can see where they are coming from.

Diablo i know why they do it. It's just a shame that people are concerned over kak like this. Just give us the game i wanna shoot me some baddies....(omdat ek nou nie onskuldige bystanders mag skiet)

Yes, I am sure that if you can shoot civilians in games there would be big problems. There would be suicide bombers and terrorist springing up all over the show and killing people.

I also think they just trying to avoid the bad PR that MW2 got, although that didn't seem to hurt their sales too much.

These days it seems like everyone is just taking the safe route, what next, replace all the guns with water pistols so that no one has to die.

Weereens verwys die ou seker na die Norwegian poepol wat al daardie mense geskiet het op die eiland en Call of Duty blameer het.

ai tog !

That's actually a fscking BRILLIANT idea for a game!! With realistic water simulation! Hell yeah, rofl!

I think it's a more a case of,
Fox News said:
"and in today's news, Man shoots up city central, the peoples' people blame video games aka GrandTheft Auto."
I think that's why they removed the concept of having be able to shoot civilians ingame.

Unfortunately a lot of narrow minded people frequent this world and will quickly point fingers at something that actually has nothing to do with a crime or killing spree.

:P can you imagine?

"Well, you see paintball causes some serious injuries, including bruises and can sometimes even draw blood. So we have decided that Office Paintball 2 will have harmless laser guns as opposed to actual Paintball guns which can be dangerous. The in game characters will also be seen wearing glasses so that the lasers cannot damage their eyes. This is all in an effort to promote safety for gamers and safety in the workplace."

"There will also be condom dispensers in the office bathrooms inside of the game."

I understand the dude's point. Sure, most people wont go on a civilian killing spree...but some....may....

I remember years ago when Gone is 60 Seconds came out, we went to see it at the cinemas. When we came out of the movie to the parking lot, a lot of the guys that saw the movie were driving like they were Nicholas Cage in that Shelby. Makes you think...

I look forward to BF3 though...
