Did Uncharted 3 break my PS3?

I've been told two different things, some say there is no way a disc can break the lens/Bluray-drive, and others say this is possible.

The reason I'm blaming Uncharted 3 is, soon after getting the game, my ps3 stopped reading discs, none of my games worked. I thought okay, I'll send it for repairs (it's 2 years old). I got it back after it had been repaired, played MW3 and ACR on it for 2 days and it worked perfectly, no problems. So I decided to put in Uncharted 3, 15 minutes later, it freezes. After I hard reset none of my games are working. Again.

Now I've checked the Uncharted 3 disc and it has a strange scratch very close to the inner circle, nowhere near where the data is contained. Did it break my ps3? Or is it some hellish coincidence that my bluray failed 2 times after playing UC3?

Small chance the disc *wobbled* inside the console whereby scratching the laser

OMG! I know how ridiculous I sound having typed that.:wtf:

**Couldn't find a better word.

Regarding the repair, if its wasnt a swop out (not pointing fingers or anything) but the people that repair it could have just recalibrated the laser and it work again... Apart from replacing the laser recalibrations work well but they not a permanent fix. I asked my technician that repairs my consoles for me... I had that same issue with my phat after 2yrs some odd days.. My slim however hgas had no issues, touching wood now.

As for uncharted being the cause i highly doubt it, it probably your lens was under strain... in my expierence if they did repair your laser (by repair i mean replace) you should not have had the same issue again. I hope the people you took it to gave a you a warranty so you can take it back.

I know how you feel that the console isnt working... I hope you get it sorted.

thats realy weird , if you can lend your copy to a mate , see if his cdrom breaks aswell ?
That way you know its the disk forshizzile.

Might just be a case of it was time for the cdrom to go ?

Good luck , im actually saving to buy uncharted3 , you almost have me scared now :S

Wowzers! I really wouldn't know, but if it did I will be pretty gob smacked! Sorry to hear about that Achtung :(
Thanks, yeah it sucks big time, I've got 3 AAA titles lying in my drawer and I cannot play, it's torture.

Yes that was what I was thinking as well, that the disc touched the laser somehow, in any case, I am getting rid of that Uncharted copy of mine. I'm not taking ANY chances with it again.

A few friends have mentioned that they might not have replaced the laser, and did a shoddy job of repairing it, otherwise how can it fail after 2 days of use. I had a 3 month warranty so luckily I didnt have to pay again. But 2 days?? That's a seriously messed up 'repair'.

how much was the repair ?

and sadly you will have to test uncharted again, its the only way to tell if they fixed it properly

Yep i concur they did a real bad job at fixing that laser, no way it can fail 2days later. I am glad for you it was still under warranty for the repair and you got it sorted out... A pity you flogged your uncharted 3, Viking has a point incase it wasnt the disc you wont have anyway to see if the laser is working fine.

It cost me R1000.
:/ I'll just finish up Assassin's Creed and MW3 before I test UC3 again, because if this happens for a third time... I will have a breakdown.

R1000 !!! eeek

yeah I know money is tight but had I had that issue I wouldve put that R1000 towards a new slim 160gb as they only R2499

Why don't you give them UC3 to use in order to test your box. Alternatively, take UC3 back to where you bought it and ask them to test it on one of the consoles in store. See if it screws out too. I suppose, it might take some time seeing as it happens after 15mins. :/

Good luck though, kiddo.

If I were you, I would test with UC3 first - as it seems to be the game that requires the most usage out of it.
If anything, you want to test a repair fully AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to confirm a proper and successful repair.

If you paid that much they should have changed the entire Blu-ray carrage, cause that cost about R950.. And you shouldnt have had any issues, just talk to my technician again... He said it should not have failed the 2nd time.

Yeah I wanted to do that, but sadly I just can't afford it right now. So it was either fix it or dont play for 3 months :/

If it happens again, I will surely give them UC3. I won another UC3 copy, so I will test out both of them, see if the scratched one is really the problem. I bought it from Kalahari though, so can't take it 'back' to them.

So what does that mean?

It means the entire blu-ray mechanism, the drive bay and the laser should have been for a new one... Cause that what people charge to do the job... Not recalibrated or repair for that price it should have to been replaced.

Achtung where in SA are you ?

You should contact MaestroZA his got a shop called quickflow or something like that

I highly doubt the Uncharted 3 disc causes the Blue-ray to stop working. It sounds like a bad repair, if I was you I would ask what exactly was done to your PS3 to justify R1000!

How do you know all this? And thanks, I will ask them what the guy did.

I agree. My 3 year old phat PS3 has never given me any problems.

I strangely had the same problem with God of War III.

Well, blaming it directly on the the game may be a long shot but one minute I was playing GOW and the next machine froze up...dead...had to get it swopped. GOW still locks the machine up now and then but luckily never to the completely dead stage. A restart sorts it out.
