DiRT Rally

There's a GIF for that
Codemasters' next Dirt game is a hardcore off-road simulation of traditional rally, is currently exclusive to PC and is also Early Access. It's also out today, with Dirt Rally - as it's called - available on Steam for £24.99.

Developed by the core Dirt team, Dirt Rally is the start of what will be the next big instalment for Codemasters' off-road series, and the most simulation minded game the studio's developed yet. The initial offering has 17 cars and 36 stages from three locations - Wales, Monte Carlo and Acropolis - and draws upon the real-life rally experiences of the game's director Paul Coleman.

The handling model is much more unforgiving than earlier Dirt games, and the rewind feature has been scrapped as an emphasis is placed on endurance. The damage you take over a stage can be fixed in-between stages, though you'll only have a limited window of time and number of engineers at your disposal - and you can acquire more engineers by progressing through the game. The stages themselves are also much closer to their real-life inspiration, with the Monte Carlo Rally's Col de Turini making an appearance in the first batch of tracks.

Thanks for the share Eugene. Been looking at a few screenshots and videos of the game. I'm super glad they've moved away from the cash cow that was Ken Block and moved to more serious rally racing stuff. The car selection looks predictable, but good, as all the favorites you'd want to drive seems to be present. I like the fact that you can modify, tweak and change your car before a stage, and afterwards you can fix it. It also seems you will have to manage your rally team for the events as well. This will be awesome, as it will give a much more rounded feel to the game.

What I am worried about is the fact that it's in the Early Access program. While I have confidence Codemasters will do a good job, and I've always enjoyed their racing games, I'm rather intrigued as to why they went for the Early Access approach. Surely this could have been done similar to a normal AAA title. At least with a set launch date, we can expect a finished product. I hope they'll not just leave this game to rot in Early Access hell.

I lost interest in Dirt since Dirt 1 and felt that Codemasters lost a lot of touch with the rally feels since Colin McRae Rally. Though I own all the Dirt games, because they're "fun". People constantly bring up the fact that games like this are hardcore simulation and say things like, "how will they balance simulation with fun?" - As a big Gran Turismo, Forza and Assetto Corsa fan, for me, the fun is in the simulation. It's the challenge that makes it enjoyable. I still believe there's a huge fan base for that over the arcade peeps who just want to play/race.

I've played a shooter, it was not great. Have not heard good thing about their other shooters either.

I think he meant Codemasters other Cricket titles, like Brian Lara Cricket iirc.
