Dishonored Hands-On Impression - Eurogamer 2012

OmegaFenix

The Legendary Troll Hunter
So I had the good fortune to get a 20 minutes hands on with Dishonored and let me tell you, what a Game. Brings back a lot of the old Thief memories except now you can possess a rat and teleport around like a Jumper.

Starting at ground level the demo had me make my way up to a greenhouse ontop of a build, render my target unconscious and get out, anyways I saw fit. I decided to go the full stealth route and utilising Blink I did a series of short range teleports to get past the guards before slowing down time to get through a crowded room then more teleporting. Got my man, knocked him out and started the decent... this is where it all went south. Got spotted but slow time followed by 3 quick crossbow bolts get rid of my would be detainers. Too a running start to a ledge, jumped and well timed Blink got me out of the complex proper. Within reach of the exit I put my unconscious cargo down to grab some health, just incase, at which point he wall killed by a rat.... :(

What impressed me most about Dishonoured was just how open it was and how rewarding creative use of your powers could be. The jury is still out on combat, I started getting the hang of the swords play towards the end of the demo, it felt weighty enough and hand depth beyond just slashing away like a lunatic.

The Special powers also take some getting use to, each one triggers differently I tried using windblast to get a guard off a ledge but it wouldn't fire, only after stabbing him in the neck with my sword did I see it needs charging. Slow time and Blink are both awesome and I can see myself using alot. Possession has its uses but I felt it ran out too fast. Hopefully there will be powerups to the Mana (I think its Mana) bar to make it last longer since managing your Mana looks like it could prove challenging on higher difficulties.

Graphically I have to say, in this build, the Unreal Engine was showing its age. The art style is awesome but the texturing and character models looked like BioShock, collectable Items even had the same golden glow. Not it is so bad that it would put me off getting the game.

All in all Dishonored was my game of show. Its was a welcome, fresh approach and I can not wait until October 12th for my Copy to arrive.

Finally someone got to play it!
Thanks for the mini review btw I'm looking forward to this one. :) do you know when it will release in south africa?

Game of the year!!! Was nog nie so excited vir 'n game in 'n laaaaannnnggg tyd nie!! t-minus 12 days!

Next week, Dishonored finally blinks onto shelves and we'll get a chance to try it for ourselves. We also may need to call in sick to get through the game, because according to Bethesda? It's huge.
In the middle of a thread speculating on how long it'll take to play the full game, Arkane Studios level designer Dan Todd weighed in with this:
"My ghost & no kills playthrough took 22 hours. That's without exploring every nook and cranny, and knowing the solution to everything beforehand. It should take more thorough / inexperienced players a bit longer than that."
In other words, if you're not the exploring type and have a strategy guide next to you, you're still going to be spending a lot of time skulking around Dunwall. We'd imagine that Todd, being a level designer with inside information, also had a few other unfair advantages. So anybody planning to marathon the game… consider breaking it up instead.
Our Take: Between this and the several other open-world action games coming out between now and the end of the year, not to mention the several multiplayer shooters that will be dropping before Christmas and the enormous games that are already out, we hope your job has an incredibly generous sick leave policy.

Fun times!

Just fooling around, tell me how does this measure up with Assassins creed and thief ?

I know dont worry :p

Its alot more Thief than AC. AC is more adventure game, while playing Dishonored I was reminded of Thief but alot more open to creativity thanks to the "Special Powers" I mean possessing a rat or a fish to infiltrate a complex or doing a running jump to get your blink in range of an out of the way ledge was awesome. I think Dishonored will be more forgiving that Thief since Corvo is much more lethal than Garrett but not as comically so as Ezio.

That's definately not due to the Unreal Engine, it's due to outdated consoles with limited memory.

Having high quality textures( UE actually uses a complex material system) and newer forms Anti aliasing, post processing, lighting all requires a huge amount of memory consoles just don't have. There's no moddable new AAA high profile UE game out there modders can abuse and play with to their hearts content. ENB for Skyrim and the abundance of high rez texture mods is just a small taste of what could be done, if devs didn't have to optimize and sacrifice so much to get the games running smoothly on consoles.

Looking forward to this one.

I didn't like Bethesda much until very recently, but whatever changes they've made, they seem to be working. :)

Sure you may not like the publisher but how about the dev studio though? How do you feel about them?
