Dishonored Hands-On Impression - Eurogamer 2012

Sure you may not like the publisher but how about the dev studio though? How do you feel about them?

I'm iffy on them. I liked Arx Fatalis, but not so much Dark Messiah.

I'm happy about Bethsoft because in the past they never really seemed to care all that much about what their players wanted. Now they're going out of their way to include cool stuff in the games they develop/publish, including free knick-knacks, and the patches come fast and furious. Used to be a whole different story in the pre-Fallout 3 days.

From what I've seen of this game so far, it looks like it has a lot of promise, but having said that, because of the ambitious scope and size of the project, there's also a lot that can go wrong.

Bethesda has nothing to do with this other than Publishing it, Arcane Studio developed it. Its like saying you wont be playing the new Hitman because Square Enix is publishing it and Square only makes decent JRPGs.

You can't compare a game developed by Bethesda (Skyrim, Fallout 3 etc) to a game Published by Bethesda (Rage, Dishonored, Fallout New Vegas, BRINK etc).

And this relevant how?

I wasn't talking about this particular game. I was talking about Bethesda. Read my posts, don't just skip through them. Jesus.

Lets Review quickly shall we? Grand.

Looking forward to this one.

I didn't like Bethesda much until very recently, but whatever changes they've made, they seem to be working. :)

Now let me break it down. Bethesda Softworks had a Publishing side & a Development side. Does that make sense? Yes ok wonderful.
Arx Fatalis (Published by Valve), Dark Messiah (Published by Ubisoft) & Dishonored (Published by Bethesda) where all DEVELOPE by Arcane Studios whos only connection to Bethesda is that in 2010 they was purchased by ZeniMax Media who also owns Bethesda.
Fallout 3 was developed and Published by Bethesda. These game have about as much in common as Guitar Hero and Call of Duty (since both where published by Activision)

You talk about not liking Bethesda pre-Fallout 3 so my question to you should be "And this is relevant why?" What has this got to do with Dishonored?

Because Bethesda, even as a publisher, won't publish a game without their seal of approval. What I am saying is, to me, that counts for something, whereas it wouldn't have meant anything to me before. Point is, there's hope for this game to be great.

Just what is it you find so difficult to understand?

Publisher Publishes what will make the most $$$ for them.

Also Bethesda Published RAGE if we should use your, utterly flawed logic, we should all be avoiding Dishonored (Regardless of its 8.9 average review score) since RAGE was a steaming pile of intergalactic shit.

Pretty lame.

It should be fun gameplay-wise but there's no getting around the disappointment with its story being so linear.

BioShock had a linear story and still managed to capture our hearts. Until the day comes when they can give me (or I can help develop) a dynamic multi-threaded story with gameplay that lets me play it entirely like I want I will gladly play this to death.

I've heard the stories of Dishonored won't be about plot points but more about something awesome you the player did, much like STALKER and even things like an Elder Scroll or Fallout game. I like that, sure I would have liked a deep compelling plot that my action influence intimately but, as yet, I can't have my cake and eat it.

Sure, but even the first Bioshock had three endings and the second had six.

I don't at all mind linear games with a great story, what I mind is giving us a really poor illusion of "choice" when there really isn't any. I mean, from what that review says, the game's ending boils down to a statistic and either you get the "good" one or the "I slaughtered everything in sight" one.

That's not choice that's... Weaksauce.

I guess I shouldn't be too critical, but it's really difficult not to be when you really love to see how your actions and choices have culminated in an ending.

I mean, you have targets in Dishonored and you can choose to kill them or "get rid of them" (read: non-lethal). Great, why not let there be pros and cons to this later on that you may have to deal with? As opposed to just boiling it down to a silly numbers game.

That's so... 90's

*rage* Stupid attachment function. Stupid "duplicate of a post you made in the last five minutes." Stupid *mumble*

Yeah I guess. Though BioShock's ending where also pure numbers based on Harvest or Freeing the Little Sisters. There is no true choice in games, only the illusion. Some illusions are better than others.
While choice might not play a big role in the plot from what I experienced & have read it features fully in gameplay. Like I said, unfortunately we can't (yet?) have our cake and eat it.

There are pros and cons. Total Biscuit sums in up well in his WTF is... video. If you go around killing everyone (and you chaos rating gets higher) number of guards will increase and you missions will play out differently. Whereas if you choose stealth the missions will also differ. I know this is a shitty explanation but here:
maybe that will clear things up a bit

I think the problem for many people will be that the chaos system is never explained in game.

I never played Rage, nor did I ever intend to, but if you felt it was that bad, then I concede the point that for you, Bethesda might not be that great as a publisher. I'm so glad you're able to form your own opinion on things! 5 golds stars for you.

Anyway, I'm curious about what makes you so mad that you have to stoop to insulting people because they don't know everything about a video game designer/publisher's history, of all things?

You hate Bethesda? You're just a miserable person? I'm genuinely curious.

I suspect it would be better if you PM'd me though. ;)

Insulting you would be calling you a fucking retard. Which I didn't.

I dont hate Bethesda (on the contararty I love Bethesda's game, i.e the ones they develop just like I Love BioWare games even if EA publishes them I do not however love every games Bethesda published.), I hate ignorant stupid people, like you <--- see now I've insulted you since I dont like being told I did something I didn't.

What got me was how you where judging the game based solely on who published it, its like the people that refuse to play Assassin's Creed or Splinter Cell (even though they love the game) just because of the publisher (in those cases Ubisoft). I judge games on who developed them, I know that a Lionhead game will be over hyped but entertaining, a Bethesda (developer not publisher) will have bugs, Obsidian will make great games that suffer from their bugs, Bioware will have great story, Bungie will make a great FPS etc. Who forked out the capital to make the game (the publisher in most cases) doesn't effect my choice in game at all. And I find it narrow minded to limit you choice in game based on what amounts to a investor.

Man I had such a good run, managed to go several months without calling anybody an idiot (to their faces) all ruined now. :(
