District 9

I read that the movie fared pretty well over-seas. Guess ill wait a little longer for it. Watched GI JOE last night though. COBRA RULES

District 9 opened at number 1 on the North American box office charts with the second largest August movie opening ever. It cost around $30 million to make and made around $33 million in said weekend alone.

This movie is going to be kick-ass.

I've worked with a number of the actors in it too, can't wait to see their apparently-awesome performances.

Its not fair, why do they get to see it first

Doesn't it come out this friday? Was at the Cinema on sunday to watch GI Joe and saw it was still (comming soon) :/

A mate of mine saw it yesterday, apparently it's well worth the wait.

Bring on Friday.

I am dying to see this but my car is broken so I can't even get to the mall to damn well do anything

I came across the following in my Gmail inbox:

Why is South Africa celebrating Neill Blomkamp's new movie, before it is even released in Mzanzi? Here's why.

1. Americans will finally know where Johannesburg is.
2. It's the first local movie that has serious hope of getting an Oscar, not because it's "foreign", but because people really think it's the best movie of the year.
3. It was made for $30 million, and it made $37 million in its first weekend alone, topping the US box office.
4. That District 9 spaceship solves the burning issue of what we're going to do with used 2010 World Cup Soccer stadiums... if we can just figure out how to get them to float upside down.
5. It wasn't made by Leon Schuster.
6. It doesn't star Colin Moss, the schmodel-chick from FHM with the hot sister, or any of the other overly recycled actor "in-crowd" we're all so sick of seeing onscreen.
7. The South Africans in it sound South African, not German, Dutch, French or American.
8. The Van Der Merwe joke has now gone international, possibly galactical.
9. Thanks to lead actor Sharlto Copley, the sexy South African accent will finally get the international recognition it deserves (Arnold Vosloo set us back by at least 10 years).
10. They're already talking about a sequel. Who said crime didn't pay?

All the thinks phoenix mentioned is good but there is one thing that stands out above all else. Its the first movie made about SA by a South African !&! Its sci-fi not some BS political drama or some crap crime story about STANDER. People can say what they want about old Peter J. But the guy stands up for the little guy. (Nielll Blomkamps Imdb page)
Too bad Sci-Fi hardly ever gets Oscars. Can't wait to see this movie.

I personally am totally pumped about this movie. I have been endlessly disappointed with South African productions. The only one that was able to entertain me was Stander.

Having Peter Jackson producing this, it has to be a big success. Comes out here in 1 week. I've heard from a few friends in the US that its great. Not compared to other South African movies, but a great movie on its own.

Well done to the crew for pulling this one off!

I would love to go watch it tonight, but alas it's only coming August 28th to Nu Metro...in other words Canal Walk.
