Do Games Tell Stories Like Porn?
The creator of Heavy Rain thinks so.

During a talk at the Game Developers Conference Europe today, David Cage, creator of Heavy Rain, likened the way most games tell stories to the way adult films do. Most games deliver exposition through cut scenes that are separate from gameplay, right? These story sequences set up the next big action scene. For some gamers, a cut scene is something to be tolerated so they can get to the action. Cage explained that pornographic films work the same way -- they present a flimsy story scene that merely serves as a segue into the good stuff. It's probably safe to say that most of us want to get right to the good stuff...

Cage tried to avoid this trap with Heavy Rain by telling his story through gameplay. Instead of pausing the action in order to get your next chunk of the plot, we receive exposition while we're actively playing the game. This is just one of the areas Cage believes he was able to innovate with Heavy Rain and encouraged other developers in attendance to explore ways to tell story through gameplay.

Well damn. That does make a lot of sence. I can't think of any game I've ever played that hasn't been like that.

for some reason this comes to mind "...are mods like porn "

*shrugs*

*blames the media*

however, i for one would love games where if you start evil at least have a path set for both evil and the planned redemption. seriously it just peeves me if you are to play an evil character and then must go all goodie or some sought out redemption...

Ahh yes, Infernal is the biggest culprit of that crime.
