It depends on what brand you are buying. The more powerful overclocked version will need 2 x 8 pin connectors.But most standard versions will only require 1 x 8pin

The MSI Gaming X requires both a 6 pin and an 8 pin connector, yes. So if you don't have two connectors (8 pin connectors can convert to 6 pin) on your PSU, you'll need to upgrade that as well.
