Hi guys, I'm not all that clued up about latest hardware specs and requirements and stuff, but I'd just like to get a 2nd opinion on whether i need to upgrade my PC anytime soon? and how soon you'd reckon this setup would last me until in terms of new upcoming games etc in 2010.

I'm currently running:

3.0GHz dual core
4gb RAM (think its 800mhz)
geforce 9800gt
550W power supply

running 32bit windows vista atm (thinking of getting win 7 tho)

Gfx card atleast in the next 6months. To a HD4850/70/90 depending on budget and to upgraid said PSU to go along with it :)

Here are my specs

Radoen hd 4850
4gigs of ram
Amd quad-core Black edition 2.61
win 7 64bit
I reckon I will not need a upgrade seen what is your opinion.

Oops seems i left out some vital info haha - updated!

here comes the debate for ati vs nvidia lol u reckon the HD4850/70/90 and not the competing product for that range from nvidia??

Nvidia is being extremely slow on the release of anything actually new. Speculation that nvidia isn't as focused on gaming as it used to be.

Your 32Bit windows has limited your RAM amount, so unless you go 64bit, upgrading ram will be a waste.

I find people are power crazy, and usually suggest killer PSUs, best look here: Power Calculator To see how much you'll need. And then add some W on top of that to allow for upgrades and cater for aging in the PSU

You graphics card will need to be upgraded - I say wait till next year for that, if Nvidia doesn't have anything by the end of the year I think it'd be safer to go with AMD (ATI)

If you finding your games are running fine, but load times are long and occasional stuttering in new areas occurs (dalaran in WoW) - you might want to upgrade your HDD to a 7200RPM HDD if you dont have one already.

nVidia is always an option for sure. But then u need to pay more, and im sure he wants to spend as little money as possibly for decent upgrade. Hence why I mention Ati :)

cool beans thanks guys :) seems like most of the criticism is directed at my gcard lol and ontop of that it's faulty.. stupid fan packing up.. yeah nvidia stuff is damn expensive. will have a look into ati. I will have to decide soon tho as i'm going overseas end of year and components are cheaper so will buy there :D just gotta make up my mind before i hop on a plane.. whats the general opinion on the ati 5000 series?? is it going too far with the price/performance ratio?

Mygaming did an article on the 5770, you can find it here and in the comments I added some price per performance:here

Few (constructive) criticism on my ranking: Keep in mind 5770 has DX11 support, and that the prices for some of the cards can be found cheaper elsewhere (i limited it to take2)

I also find that Zaps sometimes surprises with very cheap prices compared to others (this was a while ago though, not sure now)

lol wow that was an indept review :P im running on 1600x1050.. but i'll prob get a monitor that supports 1900.. so yeah thats what im aiming for :)

i've never really understood wat directx is for?!?!

Most of the pcs should be fine. But yeah a upgrade to the 5770 should keep you in the game if you laggin behind.

cool :) i was thinking maybe going one up to the HD5850.. is it a good idea? would i have to change my psu? i used a power consumption calculator thingy and it reckons i still only need about 500W (same answer i got for 9800gt) so.. not really sure how accurate these calculators are?

also regarding a new monitor.. was looking into the samsung 2333SW or P2370 (both 23").. any comments on that? :D

5850?Hell yeah. It'll last you far longer with no need to upgrade for a few years and has far better performance compared to a 5770 imo.To be on the safe side get a PSU stronger than 600w incase you wanna add something.Cant make a suggestion though on which PSU is the best hehe.

Only possible upgrades I see for your system are a better PSU (corsair 650W maybe) and a DX11 class card. 5850 is definitely the best value-for-money card atm, although when you upgrade, you might be able to get the 5870 for a decent price :)

@ Anon815 - Go for the P2350. It has a matt screen (which is nicer, imho) and its a few hundred rand cheaper than the P2370. Also has a vesa wall mount which is useful. And a better lcd panel, apparently.

anon 550W is not rly the important thing, whats important is how many amps u are getting on your 12v rail.

550W should be more than enough generally for a 5850, but, it won't be if its a cheap/crappy power supply. Any name-brand 550W will suit you fine.

If your PSU is an el cheapo, ur going to need to upgrade it. The best you could get in terms of bang for buck and upgrading on a budget would be a Vantec Ion2+ 600W. Although the 520W will probably suit you just fine.

I'm running a 4890 on the 520W model with no problems at all. And remember the 5850 is a newer card, but it also has less power consumption than the older generation, due to smaller chip size, efficiency etc. So my 4890 will use more power than a 5850.

Thus a Vantec ion2+ 520W will suit you fine, and those are only 500 bucks. But if you want to be a little more futureproof, I'd recommend the 600W version.

hahaha i think the 5870 might be pushing it :P the 5850 is prob the highest i'll go, but whats the deal with the 1gb cards giving problems where the 500mb card running fine??

hmm yeah i think im gona go with the p2350 lol apparently the p2370 isn't adjustable? no tilt? unless i read wrong hah

i got a cooler master psu.. is that a good brand for psu's?? damn lol if its not more and more things are coming up.. gona have to do some intense saving
