Do you care about who you're shooting in games?

No what you did was a poor attempt at moral equivalence.

Taliban are evil. No reasonable individual can argue otherwise. Same goes for nazis and communists.

and the american goverment ordering their people to kill other people aren't ? or is this selective evil labeling ?

They're also a bunch of brainwashed zealots who are convinced - AND BY THE INCONTROVERTIBLE POWER OF RELIGIOUS IDEOLOGY, no less - that what they're doing is right, and that the West is evil.

I think female genital mutilation is evil, yet women continue to inflict it on their daughters, believing it's the right thing to do. Nothing is really as simple as "good" and "evil". There are only perspectives and contexts, and these are absolutely worth thinking about and discussing.

Also, lol @ you accusing me of moral equivalence, and then equating nazism and communism. I suggest you go do some reading.

exactly. inception and misuse of religion are the root of all evil imho.

I said yours was a poor attempt at it :p

Commmunists are evil! LOL - what a fail.

Yeah it's not like millions died while under the boot of communists......

Stalin, Mao were nice, reasonable chaps after all.

of course they and their zion brothers is the only good folks out there, the only ones who should have nukes, rest of the world no.

and you have a problem with that? Do you want the Iranian regime to have nukes too?

i didn't know the iranian regime is Rest of the world. america and their zion brothers wants to dictate what we in the rest of the world should and should not.

you have a problem with that?

You left out "have nukes"

Does Iran not fall under the umbrella of "Rest of the world"? What countries do you mean by "rest of the world".

To answer the thread question: I find it more enjoyable to be the bad guy. Comically evil like the dungeon keeper, or the overlord... even better.

So was yours. :P

That's kinda like saying "guns are evil", because guns kill people. Any ideology, political or otherwise, can be twisted to wicked ends.

Shifting the goalposts much? The point is, America and its cronies seem to have appointed themselves the supreme authorities on who does and doesn't get to have nukes. When you're packing a massive stockpile of nukes, it seems sort of hypocritical to say nobody else can too, doesn't it?

Very interesting article, as always. I don't really care what/who I'm shooting. The only exceptions being maybe children and some animals (like dogs, I HATE killing dogs in games like CoD).

Yeah, I wish their was some non-lethal alternative, like the drugged steak in Monkey Island (if my memory serves me correctly) :p

I would shoot a child. But I am a mad man.

I've been thinking about this (well, obviously), and I guess I've realised I have a conscience about this stuff. For example, in MW2's No Russian mission, I didn't shoot anyone. I just couldn't. Its somewhat shabby, stupid plot notwithstanding, I found the game extremely engaging, and in that moment, it all felt rather real. The game did that whole suspension of disbelief thing rather too well.

I understand, of course, that for many people, it's just an opportunity to shoot pretend-guns at pretend-people, but I can't always separate myself from the potential reality of some scenarios. Maybe I don't want to. I like that games can move me sometimes.

So was yours. :P

Well I was comparing ideologies with institutionalized brutally. You seemed to cherry pick individual incidents. Rape is illegal in the USMC while chopping a person's head off for example is openly sanctioned by the Taliban.

That's kinda like saying "guns are evil", because guns kill people. Any ideology, political or otherwise, can be twisted to wicked ends.

Have you any examples where Communism was not "twisted to wicked ends"? Or Nazism or Fascism for that matter.

There must be something wrong with the ideology if everywhere it's implemented oppression and murder runs rampant

Cronies? Who might they be? Open free western democracies perhaps.

No not at all. The world is not fair. The Iranian regime is not equal to say France. Millions of people didn't die fighting despotism just to suddenly be relegated to equal status as some tinpot tyrant. So yes Democracy is the supreme authority.

You're making the exact same argument appeasers made in the 30s. They too said it was "hypocritical" to deny the Nazis the right to rearm. Look how that turned out?

I hate that too

I also saved the little sisters in Bioshock compulsively.

I saved them all in the first game, but I harvested all of them in Bioshock 2. The main reason I did that was because I just wanted to play through the story as quickly as possible and did not want to protect the Little Sisters every time as this just wasted time IMO. I felt super HORRIBLE though :(
