Do you feel odd playing games after release?

By that I mean, do you feel odd if you play a game after its initial release hype? Say you play the game a few months later.

Take Dirt Rally, there was already a lot of discussion here last year. Now I've gotten it in the humble monthly bundle I feel like is there any point in reopening the discussion again?

Open the discussion again!

I play lots of games after their release hype and it's fun when other people talk about the games too. :)

Same, I dont fall for the hype train often, I can't afford to, so I play some games months even years after release

Nope. But I must be honest though, there was a few times when FOMO hit me hard. ME: Andromeda was a must!

I guess by getting a game during the "hype" period leading up to release and during a time after release gets you into those discussion and topics with like minded people.

Getting it down the line just voids this argument as you have no one to collaborate with as the "hype" has died, doesn't mean that no one plays it any more. I would still be playing Dirt Rally if I had my PC, actually looking for a PS4 copy on the cheap.

I do that loads with many games. Firstly, games are usually so expensive on release, and as mentioned by a few already. Hyped up.

I play pretty much all my games a good while after release. Sometimes years later!

If I play a game straight after release I feel .... a lot poorer and my badnwidth a lot less because of downloading all the patches.
If I play a game 2 years after release, then I feel a lot better since I paid about 10% of the initial price and I got the whole game plus all patches in one go.

I suppose it depends on the game. If it has a multiplayer component like Mass Effect Andromeda, you'll probably be missing out on the multiplayer aspect if you play it a year from now. If it is a single player game or something like Starcraft that never dies, it doesn't bother me when I play it (I'm actually busy with the Zerg story in SC2 right now, in-between other games).

The advantage of waiting is that all the mods that were going to be released for the game, has probably been released by the time I play it (Thinking specifically of the XCOM 2 Long War mod that I'm eyeing after just finishing the base game last weekend). I very rarely pay full price for games anymore so waiting a couple of months to over a year has started to become the norm for me.

Only feel odd when buying a multiplayer game a year later just to discover nobody is playing it anymore but not so much for single player games.

Nope. Like look at the current Q1 slate of games. Far too many good games to came out in the last 4 months to feasibly be able to buy them all. I'm still planning to get Nier, Nioh and Horizon, but I'm happy to wait for good sales on those games. Not like they are going to be worse if I get them 6 months late haha :D.

^ This is the one exception!

Do I feel odd playing games after release? Not at all! As everyone pretty much said already, there are some times that too many good games comes out at the same time, and it's just not affordable to get every game at launch. Playing single player games months or even years after it's release is not a problem at all.

But then I know myself. I am very susceptible to the hype train, and have jumped in a bought a fair few games at launch. There are just certain types of games I can't help but get really excited about and just HAVE to play them at launch. And companies rely on people like me to buy their games at launch.

Not at all. In fact with the current price of games I may only pick up a game long after its release when there is a Steam sale for it. There are even some games which I have bought at release which I still haven't played yet! Then the other problem is games are rushed out the door these days so it makes sense to only play them later once all the bugs have been worked out. For example Dishonored 2 at launch was an utter mess!

I play what makes me happy, which is ironic since I choose predominantly to play rage inducing games of Dota 2, but my point is I don't feel the need to play something immediately upon release. I do however feel a little guilty about the vast majority of games I have bought and never touched. :o

There is a caveat in that this only really works for single player games. Unless a multiplayer game becomes popular you will find yourself in the following situation when trying to play one long after its release:
