My PC is on 24/7, downloads and updates are scheduled between 23:00 and 05:00 as I generally sleep during this time and seldom play games at that time of night. The only annoyance is if (especially TF2 does this often) releases an update at 18:00 and I want to play at 19:00 but the bloody servers wont allow me to connect unless the latest update is installed. But then I play something else and everything is back to normal in the morning.

I hardly use my PC at all, unless I'm working on some digital art or playing a game that I bought on PC (very rare as I prefer consoles), so my PC is off most of it's life. I switch it on when I need it, and switch it off again when I'm done. Poor thing gets very little attention :p.

I turn my computer off most evenings. My computer is next to my bed so with the blinking lights etc it stops me from sleeping unless I put something over the front of the computer to cover the lights, obviously not very good for the computer so I try avoid it by turning it off.

I normally switch my computer off when I'm done. A couple times a month I might leave it on overnight if it's downloading or rending something, luckily it's super quiet so it doesn't bother me :)

I think if I had a laptop, it would be on and off all the time. It just seems like it's 'supposed' to be be, you know.

A laptop actually has a much lower power draw than a desktop, so if any pc should be on all the time, it should be the lappy! :) I'd use one for an HTPC if I could find one cheap enough.

Lately, I have been leaving my PC on for long periods. so for example, i boot it up on a Saturday morning and then only switch off late on Sat night, even though i may only use it sporadically now and then intra-day. I have read inconclusive and conflicting reports both ways on which option is better, so decided to poll the forum to see how you guys roll
Not anymore.eletricity costs are going into the R1600 mark and now I literally switch off the house before leaving to work.

Has less to do with luck than it has to do with rigging the house to be as energy efficient as possible. The two biggest savers were changing my lights to LED lights and the solar geyser with heat pump.

That's harsh, my electricity is hovering around R600 p/m now for the last 3 years.

It's literally taking the food off my table.last year for R1000 could get me 671 kWh with running geyser on, 1000W psu pc on all day and a portable aircon for a whole month.noe R1000 gets me 600 units, which lasts me about 2 and half weeks.so now I have resorted to completely switching off the circuit breaker in the mornings (so my pvr dont record and clocks dont keep time). To further compound the issue my power goes off for a day sometimes 2. When it comes back I literally see 100 go in 2 days cause the fridge, freezer and geyser needs to get vack to normal state. Oh well life goes on.

Yeah it all has an effect. We lost 3 lights bulds (those florescent lamp types) which I cannot find replacements for since its chinese. So I run 1 60w light and if I leave it on tjo im powerless. We are in he process of having city power test our meter as how can a difference of 71 kwh be a reduction of 2 weeks of power. All this considering no new electronics have been added.just a change of a light buld.

thats insane! thats like paying for two houses to have electricity :P

dude, that's nothing! my electricity in the summer is around 1.8kpm and in winter it jumps to around 3k :-( and this is just a 3 bedroom house, 2 adults and 2 kids.

i have noticed that the geyser and the pool pump are the main culprits. But i am still not entirely convinced that a solar geyser would provide that huge a saving

As far as I know, your hardware actually takes more of a knock by the mini surges from constantly being switched on and off as apposed to just leaving it running.

Yeah its possible.tbh I'd rather pay R3000 once a year on psu than R3000 every month on electricity.
