Do you remember Total Annihilation

When other people seemed more interested in C&C, I was playing Total Annihilation from morning till evening. A far superior game in my opinion. Battles were epic. The weapons were amazing (who remember firing a Big Bertha from across the screen, just by clicking on the radar). It had more realism then other strategy games. Wrecks scattered the battlefield (until recycled), radars had a limited reach, requiring you to build more closer to the enemy's base. (with a radar jammer next to it to protect your radar of course).

And of course the battles. I remember creating an air force and giving them a group number. Then created a ground force. Some of them I attached to transport ships. Then in a massive coordinated push I would invade the enemies base. Not always an successful strategy though, but fun as hell. Other times a more patient strategy was required. Slowly moving your units up and building cannons as you went along.

Good times!

Who doesn't remember TA? You can barely mention SupCom without someone else mentioning TA.

Was a brilliant game.

Have to admit that I've never played SupCom. I've been converted to consoles some time ago and from what I heard it is best if I stay away from the SupCom port to xbox. What a pity.

I was looking for that again just the other day! TA was one of the very few RTS games I liked

I actually still have the original disk. Tried playing it a couple of years ago, but found it extremely annoying. Mostly due to the fact that you can't zoom in and out as you can with your more modern RTS games. Sometimes old games are best left memories.

Ah good old TA. I remember spending an afternoon at a friends house taking turns to play skirmishes on his pc (mine couldn't run the game). Years later we fired up TA again for a some lanning fun. My one friend wasn't too clued up on how the game worked so he landed up creating an awe-inspiring army of construction planes, needless to say we all found it extremely funny when we heard him complaining that his units weren't doing anything to the enemy and realised what he had done.

haha. What a chomp. :-)

Don't know if any of you ever tried any of the mods you could download? Except for a bunch of new units, there were some rather interesting ones. There were ones that added hovercrafts to the game. Another which let you built massive units (took a lot of resources though). Also some total conversions. The one I like replaced everything with real world units. Jeeps, tanks, helicopters and individual soldiers.

Truer words have never been spoken! Many times has nostalgia ruined older games for me because I remembered them fondly, but they didn't live up to the improved standards of today.

I never really got why C&C were so succesful and TA was not. It was far superior. You were not limited to building your base at just one spot and it featured vertical elements as well. You could for instance build rocket launchers on top of a mountain. One of my favourite strategies was to try and channel the enemy through one area and then just have some cannons that would constantly pound their path.
