Documentary about gaming addiction

Must get hold of this documentary somehow, somewhere.

Do we have any "Game addicts" in the house?

Gaming addiction could be possibly due to bad parenting, agree? Or could it also be classified as a mental problem?

Love Child, a new documentary about online game addiction in South Korea, has premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

According to the festival's official website, the documentary explores the adverse affects of South Korea's fast and affordable internet infrastructure through the story of a couple whose three-month-old daughter died of malnutrition while they were playing the massively multiplayer online game, Prius Online. The Korean MMO's name was later changed to Arcane Saga, and was finally shut down in December 2013.

The story wasn't reported on much in the United States since it broke in 2010, but the couple received a reduced sentence after the court recognized their addiction as a mental disorder.

The filmmakers talked to game developers, the police detective assigned to the case, the lawyer, and the family.

"Korea has had high speed Internet for much longer than we have in the States," director Valerie Veatch said in an interview with Indiewire. "They have a very sophisticated gaming industry and culture. This story was completely different [than] it was played in the international news media. It was fear that [drove] these news stories."

Veatch's previous documentary ME @ THE ZOO_, told the story of Chris Crocker, who uploaded the viral “Leave Britney Alone!” video to YouTube.

I wouldn't say in addicted. If I get a new game I'll disappear from the world for a while but I'm able to tell when it's getting too much. Korea seems to have a problem with it though. I've seen a few articles of kids dying from non stop play for days etc. What game is that good?

Yeah I think it's mental problems then.

I think you might be referring to this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4137782.stm but there have been other stories like this as well

I can agree with you on WoW. I used to be an addict, but as time elapsed I got bored and gave me account to someone else to continue playing till the gametime expired.

But nowadays I cannot play a game for more than an hour, will get extremely bored or will need a break.

With certain games I am like that so I don't purchase them anymore and just stick to what grabs my attention more now.

Find it pointless buying stuff which I get bored after an hour.

No I have a friend that is asian, I like them, I didn't mean to make it sound that way, I just meant that they are amazing with all tech and games. Its more like a complement.

By replying to a post stating they have seen a couple of stories of kids dying with it's mostly Asians with mad skills. I read it as you saying that asian gamers who play a lot die from gaming.

The worst part is that some of the most highly skilled gamers from Korea have serious training programs covering both physical and mental training.

That's pretty racist to generalize like that

I wouldn't say it's racist. It's a formidable fact that Asians are the bigger single-game addicts out there. Korean and Japanese teens have died from prolonged gaming sessions.

Are there stories of Germans, Russians, South Africans dying from gaming?

Thanks for helping me out "Stunt" that is what I meant but just couldn't express that in words.

They are very good at gaming, and have better technology than we have here.

Granted these cases are more common in asia, it's still an extreme and not one you can restrict to any race. Therefore to say it's always asian guys is kinda racist IMO. But I won't say anything else on the subject.

Yeah, I've seen some SA kids that just cannot drop the controller once they get back from school. It's sometimes so bad that they have these almost "demonic" fits when their parents tell them to go do their homework. This is not a once off occurrence, it happens for months now. So the parents had to take the console away as it was getting way too unhealthy for the kids.

Then you get these people that "live" in front of the console or PC and they don't get out. This leads to major health problems and malnutrition and in some cases death. This scares me. Eish,

It's less of a race issue and has more to do with the culture of the region IMO; however it would likely be safer to maintain radio silence on this matter :p

You're scaring me now, I at least workout for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 in the afternoon (excl. a 2.4 mile jog) while on a very bland, diet :(

So, my addiction is insured :p

Same here.

I gym 1h a day, 5 days a week. Sit in front of PC 9 hours a day.

If you stick to some outside time and exercise then you are already ahead of the curve. Take frequent breaks and give you eyes a break also.
