Doom 4 local servers

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has any information regarding the launch/future of multiplayer doom in South Africa.

It really looks like its going to be a load of fun and it would suck if we miss out on a proper experience because we have to play on EU servers like so many games that have launched in the past few years.

Fixed that for you...

From my experiences there are never local servers for new games, there was a rumour that Blizzard were looking at one, but aside from that EU is as good as it gets... But iv also had very few issues playing on EU servers...

Dedicated server is a very loosely used term these days. Are they true player-hosted dedicated servers with custom control given to users? Or are these lobby-based shards that are created by the software when a player starts or joins a lobby?

I am leaning towards the second one, seeing as there is no word on player-hosted servers, there are dedicated servers in the sense that it won't all be peer to peer, but I see no mention of separate tools or hosting options outside of the game itself.

I could be wrong and they can surprise everyone or they kept all of the details from everyone. And there was mention about dedicated servers being offline during the alpha which leads me to believe the servers are hosted by ID in chosen locations for these dedicated lobbies.

If the new Trackmania ditched custom player servers then I fear the worst for Doom.

I just received a closed beta key for this weekend. I will give it a go and report back what the average latency is like.

Without local servers the game will be dead in SA. A twitch shooter needs low latency and that's the end of that.

So if you're buying this for MP, DON'T. With a ping over 200 it's near unplayable, so unless local servers are confirmed don't waste your money.

But may they not possibly release alongside a dedicated server or SDK?

They may, but until that is confirmed and we actually have local servers I would hold off. This is all excluding the fact that there's so little left of Dooms original soul in this game. It genuinely feels closer to Call of Duty than Doom and I believe it's all for the sake of making it console friendly.

Well Doom for me has always been a single player initiative, and from the looks of things it seems to be upholding the original and presenting a fantastic front. Makes me think or feel like I would be playing a new release of the original '93 or '94 title.

If the SP maintains the 2 gun limit then it's already forgotten its heritage... :(

Yip figured as much.
I've been going through hundreds if not thousands of posts looking for any clues about the servers and can't find anything which is usually a bad sign.
