Dota 2

Hey Guys,

For those of you that are interested i will start posting games we are casting here(both Local and international) our stream should be up by the end of this week as well

Tournament: JDL season 4
Division: Europe 1
Game: Goomba Gaming versus Denial
Date: 25/11/2014
Time: 22:00
Casters: InSanity & Slimz

My group has decided to ditch Dota 2. We love the game, but we can't put up with the community anymore. With 3 out of every 4 games, we end up feeling agitated and angry afterwards. The community is just too bad. I know it sounds cliche, but wow. The bit of fun we have is not worth getting ourselves so worked up.

The culmination of the decision was this week when we were playing together and some guy did not stop giving me grief while I was playing Dazzle. No matter what I did, it was never good enough. Even when I kept him alive long enough to get Roshan down to half his health (on his own), he bitches and moans when all 5 enemy players come out of nowhere and gank us.

This kind of thing is so commonplace and I'm just over it. It's really not worth the rise in blood pressure. Excellent game, but one of the worst communities ever.

Weird, I have found it's way better than it use to be. Do you play on the EU servers?

I know the feeling it's always someone elses fault or the enemy is "hacking" nobody can admit they are having a bad game, I rarely play non-ranked nowadays due to the absolutely dreadful community in SA dota, if I play on South African servers once a month it's alot.

We play only on SA because my SO has been stuck with Telkom issues, making his international pings shoot above 1000ms regularly. Maybe that's the problem. South African gaming communities are awful in general. Don't know why. I remember in games like DayZ and Rust people also said they refuse to play SA because of the community.

Another thing SAs seem to love doing is calling for reports on specific players for no reason whatsoever. The other day I was playing Riki and I was lagging a bit behind in the early game because I was being harassed by the enemy team. One of my teammates then called for everyone in the match to report me for 'playing kak'. About mid-way through the match I finally caught stride and started owning, which snowballed into us eventually winning the match. I didn't get an apology though.

I just give up. I don't have to deal with such crap when I'm playing games for the enjoyment of it.

I know the feeling Telkoms lines have been out here for 3 weeks all I can say is thank God for LTE.

What do you chaps think of Oracle? Played him 6 times in a row now, can't get enough of him!

He's fun very complex though and you can really fuck up your team if you don't combo his skills correctly. His strongest part is his mid game though with just mana boots + urn you can accomplish a lot and actually secure a win if played correctly.

I'm starting to get tired of Pa.As I mainly play Int heroes I'm just food for Pa and it really pisses me off some times.

I feel your pain.

There is something about playing Dazzle that makes (stupid/ungrateful) people hate you. I think it's an expectation thing, where every time a crappy player dies, they look for a reason for why it could or should be someone else's fault, and if you're Dazzle, it's almost always invariably your fault because you didn't Grave/Wave/Urn/Mek them every single second of every game all the time, at once, forever.

You can pull off the most amazing clutch Graves, heals etc. and people will ignore them completely, then yell at you like a rhesus monkey on mic when you make one mistake (even if your "mistake" was not healing them and ONLY them 100% of the time).

I love Dazzle because he's an incredibly good hero, but I hate playing him because everybody turns into an asshole when you do.

Reminds me of this Treant Protector game I had last night. Everyone plays super aggressive expecting me to always be there with the save while expecting towers to constantly be healed up. It's not like Treant got a nerf to his living armor cooldowns... oh wait:rolleyes:

Also, Kimitar, I swear I've played a game or 2 with you :? Or maybe the name's just familiar...

Okay guys, so I'm slowly getting back into DOTA. I know I should be playing a variety of heroes, but I keep going for Sniper, regardless :P (Noob, I know).

Currently, I follow the following build:
Take Aim and Headshot take priority (Obviously a point in Assassinate on 6/11/16) when I then throw all points into Stats and my last 4 into Shrapnel.

I start off with PT and Tangos.
Then I go Shadow Blade, Yasha, Sange, Desolator. Depending on the situation, I then either get Butterfly and then/or Daedelus.

I mostly mid with him and can carry quite well. the reason I prefer him is his range, making it easy to harass and weaken enemy heroes.

What I want to know though is:
  • 1. Is my build right?
  • 2. What should I change if it sin't?
  • 3. Which other characters should I try to play with given my experience?

You'll start struggling with sniper once you play higher skill level games, he is very easily countered and picked off.
He is a good "noob" hero to start with while you learn the basics and mechanics of the game.

Your build is fine, personally I do shadow blade and then go straight for Desolator followed by a butterfly or Daedalus.
It really depends on the flow of the game and what sort of team we're up against. If they have squishy supports like a Crystal maiden I almost always go mask of madness and pick them off constantly.

I would however recommend playing someone like axe as your 1st tank/melee hero. He is relatively easy to play and can take some serious dmg before going down.

Thanks man, yeah was hit with an Axe Tank last night, Blade Mail and Blink Dagger, he also had Tiny as his supporting Blink Dagger buddy. They squished me often and hard. Think they had Weaver, OmniKnight and PA. We had Sniper, Shadow Shaman, Blood Seeker, Riki and Chaos Knight.

What build would you suggest for Axe?

Before anything else: Always carry a TP scroll. That is the most important thing you need to learn as a new player, and the reason I prioritize it over everything else is because of how important it actually is, and how often people seem to ignore it. A single TP scroll can change the course of an entire game. Make a habit of buying them. I don't care if you are 100 gold away from your SHINY MIGHTY AXE OF SQUISHING THINGS DEAD, get the TP first.

Moving on... you should avoid falling into the trap of only playing heroes you are "comfortable" with, because they encourage bad habits. The most common newbie trap is playing the mid role. While playing mid is a good role to learn, some of the skills you learn there are usually only useful if you're actually playing mid. Mid requires map awareness and last hitting/denying skill. It's not a very demanding role per se, since everyone usually defers to you for the first few minutes and your courier-use takes priority. It sometimes makes people develop bad habits like taking the courier when someone else is using it without thinking about it, because they're so used to playing the mid role.

Other common traps are "invisible" heroes and junglers, both of which are super easy to counter (wards/sentries/dust and ganks, respectively).

I'd really recommend transitioning to support ASAP so you can begin to learn stuff like positioning, ward/deward spots, how to block/unblock camps, pulling, stacking and so on. Contrary to popular belief, support is actually the hardest role to play, as it requires the most thought and decision-making skills, and you constantly have to use your time effectively, rather than just "throw yourself at creeps 24/7 to get farm" that carries tend to do. For example, if you're not actively ganking or warding or dewarding, but you happen to be in your jungle, consider stacking a camp or two if you can, so that a friendly carry can clear it. You should constantly be maximizing the effectiveness of every second you're alive. Occupy space, occupy enemy space, do whatever you can to make it easier for your team and harder for the enemy, and for the love of all that is good, don't use your big fancy nuke to steal the last hit from a carry. Yes, Laguna Blade is cool, yes Finger of Death is fun, but use them to lower an enemy's health in a key encounter so that a friendly carry can mop up and secure the kill. It's tempting when you see an enemy carry with low health to use your big spells on them, but rather use a stun so that you can secure the kill for your carry. Save the big guns for an enemy carry on full health (or near full health), so that you swing the odds in the favor of your carries in a team fight.

I don't have much to say about Sniper that other people can't tell you, except that you should rethink your stance on Shrapnel, especially if you are playing mid. It's arguably his best spell (it damages towers <-- no longer true as of 6.83).

Axe is a situational hero that you should only really play if your team is well-coordinated (also helps if you are facing at least some melee enemies as opposed to all ranged). He's next to useless if you have no follow-up from your team. Deceptively, he starts off seeming really powerful, but as the game progresses, you'll notice that you get weaker and weaker in comparison to everyone else, which is why it's so key that when you initiate, your team knows it's going to happen, and will help you make the most of it. Positioning is key on Axe (mostly with respect to blink dagger usage), so I don't think he's a good hero to play until you've actually learned some positioning skill (say, by playing supports, as above). Also, I want to mention one more thing about Axe, something super important: Don't steal kills from carries. Just don't. I know that Culling Blade is super fun and satisfying to use, but after a certain point, Axe just cannot leverage the gold and experience advantage anymore, HE IS GOING TO BE OVERTAKEN AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. He is an initiator and a tank, that's all. Save the Culling Blade for when/if you find a solo kill somewhere. The only exception is if you know no one else can get the kill and you are the only one who can secure it, in which case, go nuts (remember that if Culling Blade successfully kills someone, it goes off cooldown, so you can use it again, mana permitting.

My final tip on Axe that will make things much easier for you: You can force nearby enemy creeps to attack you by right clicking on enemy heroes no matter where they are on the map (as long as you can see them, of course). The best way to do this if your enemy is far away, is get near the creeps, right click the enemy hero, immediately hit "A", then click on the ground anywhere, which will make Axe attack the nearest creep. This will make farming and clearing/pushing lanes much, much easier.

e:

One more thing: if you're going to be playing heroes you've never played before, be considerate and don't try them out in public games. Play bot games or in-house games so you can get familiar with them without screwing over other players when you mess up on difficult heroes. :)

This new bloom festival scares me cause its the first time dota has introduced pay to win

I've got a feeling it's this fear that made them only have a couple of windows each day where the pay to win can influence the game. If it grows, it'll definitely spell trouble.

Although was quite funny last night me and mates didnt know what was going on buy jammed anyway our beast had nothing their beast they must of used easy 10k ability points and we still won

What are you guys talking about? There's no pay-to-win here. I've played the Year Beast event twice and won twice (meaning I won two sets) and I haven't spent a dime on it.

Nobody is forcing you to buy anything, it's still based entirely on your skill as a team.

Do you understand what pay to win means it doesnt mean you cant win it just means the more you pay the more of an advantage you get i.e. the first one i jammed the enemy team pushed a full lane up to our rax with their first year beast
