Dota 2

Do you understand what pay to win means it doesnt mean you cant win it just means the more you pay the more of an advantage you get i.e. the first one i jammed the enemy team pushed a full lane up to our rax with their first year beast

1). The "advantage" you get is negligible at best.
2). You accrue points whether you pay for them or not.

"If you don't buy X you will most likely lose this game" is a lot different from "Buy Y if you want, it might make the game slightly more fun/challenging, but there's no real need since you'll get Y eventually anyway".

This new bloom festival scares me cause its the first time dota has introduced pay to win

Yip saw that as well, played against a group with a fucking insane yb and that was literally after the event went live.

It's not negligible, you obviously haven't come up against a $30 YB (See what I did there) lol

I've spent a lot on Dota 2 over the last couple of years but I think I'm over it for good, I still enjoy the odd game with my gf every now and then, but the cosmetic items are becoming stupidly expensive, the local community is more toxic than any other gaming community I've ever been a part of. The whole putting stupid timers on items so I can't sell them when I want is also retarded.

This. So much this. Glad I left Dota 2, my life just has so much clarity. I can definitely say I'm a better person w/o it.

^ Actually I specifically experimented with this. Our team had a YB with no upgrades against a heavily upgraded YB and I solo killed their YB with Axe (Heart with Blade Mail takes care of it quickly, if you're curious) while my team took out their team.

If you make good picks (team-fight heroes, obviously) work together and know what you're doing, then yes, the YB upgrades are negligible. I guess if you're not good at the game, then YB upgrades could help? I still don't see this as Valve forcing pay-to-win on anyone though.

I'm going to have to stick to my guns: Nine times out of ten, if you lost a year beast game you were either not playing well, or you were up against a better team.

I'm using 'you' in the general sense, not referring to YOU or anyone else here specifically, since I have no idea how good/bad any of you actually are. ;)

Update:

I've played six YB games and won five of them. The one we lost we deserved to lose because we played badly and the other team was simply better.

How much did I spend on this event?

$0.

I've played 3 YB games. And from what I have seen it is the same as most games of Dota. In the sense that the better team ends up winning usually. The one game we lost we picked very poor heroes; laned badly and made bad decisions. The one game that we won, we were up against a far superior beast and none of us had sunk real money into the mode and yet we won handily regards. (r[A]t Dota boys)

How much did your teammates spend?

The YB definitely has a tangible effect on the game, forcing team fights' time and location to some degree. My YB game went poorly once the YB spawned, as we weren't ready for team fights yet, and we were avoiding them smartly while laning.. This pushed the momentum to the other team, forcing us to push earlier than we really should've.

That Dota bug is itching again and I love to try some new strats.

Would anyone like to share their foolproof or undiscovered way to win with a specific hero assuming that you're not countered?

My fav is choosing shadow shaman and then rushing mana boots and farming towers at lvl 6. I level the abilities net + forked lighting first. I tend to max lightning 1st for that excellent farm capability and kills while netting in a gank (last hit).

Next item is boots of travel for further pushing towers, really distracts attention of opposing team as they have to prevent me from constantly switching lanes and pushing. Gives the team freedom to farm or gank.

simultaneously I will farm bloodstone and aghs, maybe sheepstick for more ms and ultimate item is refresher orb.

Please share your favourite strats/builds!

This is a difficult post to answer, as you should ideally be building around what your team needs, and what enemies you're up against (including what item choices they've made). Going the same build over and over again with the same heroes will probably work in lower tier games, but in higher MMR games, you're going to struggle.

That said, I tend to play a lot of solo offlane, and one of my favorite heroes is Dark Seer. I love using Vacuum and Aghanim's Wall of Replica creatively to cause mayhem and mass confusion. It's just so much fun! :)

e: I can give you some cool synergies though, if you'd like (not sure if all of these are still viable due to patches changing things since I last tested them):

1). Undying and Naga Siren: Cast Tombstone in a team-fight and then use Naga's ultimate. It will cause masses of zombies to spawn. When you have billions of zombies, turn off Naga's ult and laugh like an idiot as your enemies flee in terror (and probably die).

2). Batrider and Dark Seer: Cast stacks of Sticky Napalm on your enemies, then use Dark Seer's Ion Shell on your heroes and chase (combine with Firefly for even more hilarity). The Napalm makes it extremely difficult for the enemy to get away from the Ion Shell's effect, since it causes them to turn extremely slowly. Use Dark Seer's Surge ability to chase even harder and block enemy movement etc.

3). Blood Seeker and Zeus: Cast Blood Rage on Zeus, then use Zeus' ultimate. It'll make it do more damage.

4). Pudge/Vengeful Spirit and Techies: Hook/Swap enemies into landmines.

5). Tiny and Centaur Warrunner: Toss Centaur onto enemies, then use Hoof Stomp to stun, then use Landslide to stun again. Should be an easy kill on just about anyone in the early game.

6). Broodmother and Lycan: Use Howl when spiderlings are attacking towers/heroes for massive damage boosts.

7). Dark Seer and Riki/Bounty Hunter/Brood Mother (any invis hero, basically): Cast Ion Shell on your invisible ally, and have them stand next to your enemy. The enemy will take damage, but cannot see the source without detection. It's especially effective against squishy supports in low tier games, as they will often die before they even realize what is happening.

8). Pugna and Io: Tether Io to Pugna, then use Pugna's Lifedrain on Io. This will heal you both very quickly, simultaneously. This is highly situational, so be careful how you use it.

9). Pudge and Omniknight: Repel makes Pudge immune to his own Rot, so cast it on him before he's about to do his combo (Hook, Rot, Devour).

Haha thanks Kimitar!
Love those synergies man!
I should really challenge myself with ranked games as I only play low tier pubs.

Pretty interesting video documentary that I haven't seen before.

Check it out if you've only played DotA 2 and never tried its predecessor, it has some history about the game and the troubles that DotA 2 had getting off the ground early on.

Thats amazing! i love videos like that.

Steam actually brought out a very cool Dota2 movie, following a few players and teams in the competitive scene called Free to Play.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjZYMI1zB9s

It is over an hour long, you can download it on steam as well. Enjoy!

Surprised there is very little discussion going on here with the International going on? Has anyone downloaded the Dota Reborn beta? What a waste of 8 gigs, SA server don't support it, can't watch games that have been played in the standard release, can't play with people using the standard game.
