Download Box slash File Server

Hey All...

Just saw the article about the latest version of uBuntu released and has got me thinking. I have been wanting to get my second PC up and running as a dedicated download/file server box so as to not keep my gaming rig on 24/7.
Would uBuntu be recommended for this or shall I opt for something else?

It'll be sitting on the floor, at my feet and I don't particularly want a screen or even a keyboard/mouse connected so I'll probably RDP into it if need be. Thinking of keeping all my media on it (movies, series, pr0n, etc.) and streaming it to my gaming rig and/or my Xbox.

What are your guys suggestions or opinions?

I always have issues when trying to get files off a Linux box into Windows, it walways seems more of a hack than its worth. But I'll admit I'm a Linux noob!!!

I'm also interested in this solution coz I have a spare PC lying around, so gonna keep an eye on this thread.

I know OpenELEC is quite popular with this regard, just I have issues loading it onto this spec machine for some arb reason.

I have found that putting a password on the file and then logging into it over the network works just fine, Because just sharing it like windows it keeps asking for username and password.

you could also look at xbmc on top of linux or this http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMCbuntu

Yeah I'm familiar with XBMC, and though an amazing piece of software (and bundled with OpenELEC). Not quite what I'm looking for. I am simply looking to have this machine as a dedicated file server / download box.
I will then navigate to said machine via my gaming PC in order to watch what I wish. I do not wish to have any peripherals attached to the machine besides an Ethernet cable.
