Dragon Age vs Demons Souls

Hey dudes

I'm really into RPGs; my favourite being Final Fantasy. I'm torn between getting Dragon Age and Demons Souls though.

I don't want to get both; as its an investment in time I don't have. :(

First of all; story is important to me. And I prefer real-time hack 'n slash type combat - this business of designating targets I can only stomach in FF. Lastly, good visuals wouldn't hurt either.

Any thoughts?

Sorry if this is somewhere else; no time to search - dodging my boss.

Well, I never got to play Demon's Souls.

From your description however, Id be inclined to advise that you skip Dragon Age. It is very technical, and the combat requires patience. If you are looking for a more straight forward hack n slasher I would check out Torchlight...although you are probably looking for something on PS3?

Yeah Tinman; I'm looking for something for the PS3. I don't mind if its technical...I just don't want the combat to be like Oblivion - that felt hollow and uninvolving.

Torchlight is more of a cartoon version to Diablo... i think thats what the blizzard people wanted to keep us busy with before releasing Diablo III and so that we could keep quiet until then

I don't think Demon's Souls is right for you, but from what I've seen neither is Dragon Age.

However, if you have to pick between the two (and since you're battling for time) I'd say go for Dragon Age for sure: Demon's Souls requires a lot of patience and many hours of play before it becomes rewarding.

I have both Demon's Souls and Dragon Age, but I would recommend Demon's Souls before recommending Dragon Age. Dragon Age has a better, more immersive storyline, but Demon's Souls has better real-time hack 'n slash combat (more blocking than hacking 'n slashing actually :p). If you love RPG's and have the patience to play an insanely difficult game, then get Demon's Souls, it's one of the best RPG's ever made and a truly unique game, there is nothing else like it. It does take a lot of playtime before getting rewarding, but it is probably the most rewarding game I have played in my life. I have played about 100+ hours of Demon's Souls and I'm still playing it regularly. Dragon Age isn't bad, it's also one of my favourite recent RPG's, but compared to Demon's Souls it just doesn't bring anything new to the genre.

Thanks Wlad and Deceptor, was actually leaning that way...just needed that added confirmation.

Just a note: It seems you are very busy at work and that you need something to just relax with at nights at home.

Demon's Souls in not such a game. It's frustrating and it takes a lot of patience to get anywhere.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great game and I love it, but it just seems to me that you need to look at something else.

Shot for the concern Etiko; but patience is not really the issue here - I'll gladly battle through a rewarding game. Its time.

I play varsity rugby as well as other sports socially; and with the likes of God of War 3, Final Fantasy 13, Heavy Rain, Dante's Inferno and Gran Turismo 5 releasing soon, it would be foolish to be stuck with 2 games that represent a potential investment of 100 hours or more each.

Well I'm sure an RPG doesn't require greater intellectual aptitude than say a VARSITY degree in Electrical Engineering...cum laude.

Amazes me how gamers don't want to be stereotyped as pimply lard asses that squirm at the sight of a female or the thought of physical endeavour; but then don't pay the same courtesy to individuals that have chosen to pursue activities that stray from THEIR idea of what's intellectually engaging.

Dude, get a life.

They are both excellent RPGs though and at some point, you WILL want to play them both.

Dragon Age is a refinement of Bioware's classic RPGs. Good looking 3D engine, deep party interactions, involving tactical party combat (lots of pausing) and MANY choices (no moral system though) with butterfly effect consequences and of course excellent storytelling and dialogue. It doesn't revolutionize the RPG genre, like I said, its more a refinement, its still going to pull you in and eat up your free time and you'll gladly let it.

Demon's Souls on the other hand is a unique and original game. Dark original story and setting, combat oriented, very VERY challenging and rewarding blockNslash combat (not for the faint of heart), great graphics, very cool integration with PSN letting you see other people's actions through "ghosts" and the game invasion mechanic. This game has you sitting on the edge of your seat with tension, but does take a bit of investment before it starts pulling you in.

My personal pref is Dragon Age, but like I said, if you like RPGs at all, you really want/need play both :D

Uh...ja HANDsolo; I did get a bit out of hand there. Seen some of your other posts on other threads and should have known it was just you mucking about. Soz for me coming so hard at you.

@Blackhand: Dude, that was really informative - thanks. The only problem now is that you've made me want to get both games...
