I dont want the pc to boot direct into 7, i want ze boot menu to show up

Google is your friend :)

I have not done this before, but I am sure a lot people would have wanted to do this before you :)

Why you want dual boot?

Load it from xp and then choose your partion the rest is automated ,that how I have it set.

If you need to remove it go to ask vg for the proper way to remove a dual boot.

I have been running windows 7 for a long time now. and most issues has been resolved.
If you have a Windows 7 Pro Copy, just enable the Windows Xp virual Machine if you are afraid or things that might not work in WIn7...
Drivers is not a problem either, I installed some Old stuff on WIndows 7 to see if it will work. If there is not a Windows vista, or xp driver available for some of the things I tested, Use the 98 driver(for some reson that i do not know the awnser to) it works.

Either Rather not partion a drive in 2(it makes it slower). Slap in another drive (atleast a 80gb) and install Windows 7 on that. So that if you want to boot back to XP just change your boot priority....
1 thing tho, make sure the Xp drive or any other drive is not pluged in when installing Windows 7, because it WILL overwrite your old boot up files of the older systems.

the reason why i want to dual boot is I really dont want to reinstall all those apps I already have installed on XP, thus i want to dual boot the 2 os's and incase i screw things up in say win 7 (trying to modify things as i always do) i can always fall back to xp to salvage files etc.

thanks venom i'll see if it works tonight

i prefer to partition my drives, if one partition gets corrupted or formatted i'll still be able to access my other ones, instead of losing say a whole terabyte of data. and partitioning my drives keeps things organised for me.

I have seen 2 system partitions crash quite a view times when loading 2 Os's on 1 drive with more than 1 partition.... Then all your data is gone, those that you did not want to go lost and the new data.. Reason why I suggest using a completely different "clean" drive for a new install, then you can still access everything after you hooked up your other drives after installation of windows.

But if that has worked for you over the years, go for it.
Dualboot has caused to much issues for me in the past, so I am really skeptical about it.
