Want

Line Speed: 384 / 512 (not to sure hows gaming like on 384 partic int servers)
Package: ????????

Need help with what package to go for.

Dude why not just stay with the 4mb and go for Telkoms 5GB INt 30 GB local.

Its like R800 for the line rental, cap and telephone line rental?

i use a 5Gb IS account, the telkom one is FAR cheaper, but I havent bothered changing it yet.

5Gb is plenty for ALL my local gaming, COD, BF2, TQIT, TF2, L4D2 and many many others - all with VOIP. Regular updates and patches.

I really havent run out of bandwidth.

When downgrading your ADSL line u need to think of the following:\
-How many ppl are using the line(2 or more will strain a 384 line)
-Will you be using multiple applications needing internet access(eg dwnloading youtube vid and play COD4 would result in major lag on a 384 line)

As for bandwidth look at how much you used previous and whether it was local or international bandwidth. Then check on whether u need unshaped or shaped b/w(eg int gaming requires unshaped b/w to play with a respectable ping)

A cool option i found was IS semishaped
the b/w is shaped during office hours and unshaped the rest of the time,

For local b/w i'd also look at IS Fix accounts a 30 gig local + 2 gigs international is R138 (if u dnt disconect the account you can get up to 30 gig int on it :>)

I'd get the bandwidth from
Vanila (http://vanilla.co.za/dsl_faq.php) They have some really cool payement and b/w option. U can get IS SAIX or MTN b/w from them. The supports pretty sweet 2.

or
web africa (http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/)

Think ima try ipeg again, was good when i had it, 1 gig unshaped + 10 gig local (every thing prepaid) for R70

I use the R554 per month 5GB 4mbps deal from Telkom and supplement it with a 5GB afrihost account.

I usually plow through the Telkom 5GB to get to the 30GB local.

I recently moved from 384 to 4mbps and it is incredible. If you are not doing any heavy dling then its fine. I also found it was fine for gaming. My pings seem to be more dependent on the ISP than anything else.

384 was not working for me gaming and the girlfriend browsing the net at the same time...so upped it to 4mb and never looked back :) running off of a 5GB IS cap and its server me well.

Normal internet usage, YouTube vids and gaming - only ever capped out once. That was the month I got 4mb :)

Dont go for 384kb/s you will more than likely regret it. Go for the 512kb/s and then get Afrihost 10 gig cap for 250pm and top ups of 29pm.

Youre looking at about R600

I find unshaped does not make that much of a difference, maybe 10m/s nothing really.

With Webafrica, you pay R70 for prepaid shaped (Exorbitant) and R125 (Ridiculous) for unshaped, and it only gives me that extra 10 ms.

Bring on lower priced bandwidth

Im on a 384kbps uncapped unshaped account from www.saol.com
ADSL LINE RENTAL INCLUDED
and it uses the seacom link :)
On world of warcraft my latency is usually around 300ms.
its a fantastic deal and no setup fee.

I appreciate the fact that everyone wants the fastest lines ,
but when you have to restrict yourself to a budget but you want a uncapped unshaped solution that allows for great online gaming speeds,
this package made the most sense to me.
And you can download 3 gig in 24 hours ..
Thats 90 gig in a month ..
For only R500 with ADSL line rental included ?
If thats not a good deal , i don't know what is...
