Dune 2 - Building of a Dynasty

Well how could you not remember this game.
I am now going to try and do this topic again, yesterday I couldn't as no matter how much I tried I kept on getting interrupted, well that's because I was at work and I should be working instead of typing away on the keyboard trying to win something.
Anyways back on topic
This game was and still is awesome... really really or-sim .
Back in the day, early 90's for me, the game was released in 1992, I would beg my parents to let me go to my friends house on Fridays for the weekend so that I could play this new game.
It had a cool intro that amazed me, awesome graphics weehee

Usage of a mouse, this was the first game that I had to use a mouse with (it did have keyboard only support, which we ended up using when we got our own pc and a copy of the game). I learnt how to double click with that game so I owe that game a lot for my skillful double clicks that I perform at least 100 times a day. My brother and I would play this game together when we eventually got hold of a mouse, I would control the mouse and he would say build here, build there, enemy approaching, SAND WORM!!! move your harvester off the sand... Those were the days. Winter rain, blankets, tea and good old gaming with a real classic.
3 playable factions (Ordos, Harkonnen, Atreides)with a couple different units making each faction different. One of my favourites and most unique is Ordos' deviator (turning a unit under your control for a short time)
2 other factions (Freman and Sardukar) Freman joining up with Atreides and Sardukar being controlled by the Emperor.
Gathering of resources. You had to gather spice. Yes spice, not gold or gems or the usual crap but some powerful mind altering expensive spice.
Fog of War, the famous black stuff surrounding your area of control, well yeah that came from Dune 2.
All of that new stuff including smooth controls and well balanced game play made this game the father of RTS and dawned a new era in the genre. Now how many games do you know that did that.

The game had 2 sequals, Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune. Dune 2 is abandonware and can be downloaded freely and is compatible with Windows 7 :D

Basically the story of the game is from Franks Herberts novel "Dune" in which Atreides and Harkonnen are fighting for control over a planet named Arrakis which contains this valuable spice. The emperor (Sardukar)sides with Harkonnen as the leader of the Atreides is very popular among the population and if the Atreides win the war they might dethrone the emperor. Atriedes learn about the Freman, side with them and an epic battle ensues.

You can either download the game or buy the movie on dvd (I have it, because my gf bought it for me just because it was a really nice Christmas present and she loves me).
Just be careful the download is nearly 4mb... haha when I was in junior school I was so upset that it was deleted off the family (well my moms work pc, but you know what I mean ;)) because it took up so much space on the 386's 20mb hard drive. It actually made me cry because it was deleted, just shows how awesome the game was, and probably still is since it is so fondly remembered 20 years later.

Another legend part doom. I literary sat at school working out strategies :o

...OK it turned me into a dune fanatic. I have the flicks, books and even the books that expand on all the ideas like the road to dune. Still great fan of the whole idea. Long live Muad'Dib !

:edit
And.... even the dune mud

I still give quite a smirk each time I think to myself I need to "charge" my phone. Except its said tjaarge would be my guess each time they shoot the sonic wave. Ooh remember the sonic wave tanks...

Oh yes. The forefather to all RTS games in my opinion. Loved it.

And don't forget those sand worms!

Yeah I think the sandworms were the only unique enemy in any game that could swallow any unit whole. Made them very scary and if you weren't paying attention to your army it would wreck havoc when massing troops for an assault.

I had this game on my Sega Megadrive, only RTS on that console as far as I can remember. Loved the game, kept me playing for hours. I'll check out the pc version, I'm sure it's much easier with the mouse. Bring on the nostalgia :)

I wonder if that was the reason for Red Alert finding its way over to PlayStation and LOTR BFME 2 going onto Xbox 360. Still can't really imagine playing a RTS without a mouse now, the keyboard made it a little in accurate.

I still want to get hold of Dune 2000 again. That was like the more modern version of Dune 2, just updated graphics, group select etc. Don't think it did too well though.

House of Harkonnen FTW

You guys ever watched the mini series? How about the films?

I saw the miniseries that was on SABC3 some years back and watched the first movie. I think Dune 2000 had those FMV's with the actors from the movie which was pretty cool. Also read the first book when I was much younger. I think I should revisit Dune again sometime, it was a pretty awesome story.

What, it was on SABC 3??? And I didn't watch it, wow that is a fail moment from me.
Yeah Dune 2000 did have the fmv's with the actors, I just remember the guys with the HUGE eyebrows. I remember thinking, damn if I was there I would take a pair of scissors and chop chop chop, just like the McCain ad lol.
I haven't read any of the books, I think my brother has one of the books, I think I should steal it.

Ah Dune, I played this game, and I read the first book. I should get around to reading the others as some stage.

I never saw the movie or series, but I did listen to the Iron Maiden song "To Tame a Land" a lot, which is about Dune. Had a quick look at Wikipedia, and apparently they wanted to call the song Dune, and asked for permission from Frank Herbert's agents, and received a message saying "Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially bands like Iron Maiden", and so they had to call it something else.

Bit of useless trivia for the day :D

I would have to say, "they just got told" :)
Its the funniest thing I have heard all day which is nice since my day has been fairly crappy so thanks for that. In fact have a rep.
So which house was your favourite of them?
