E3 2014 - The oddity continues

I've taken a slow approach to this years E3 coverage due to a number of reasons. Work and personal life chaos being the biggest factors. As such, I'm only able to catch up with some of the videos now. What I'm seeing though, is a repeat of 2012's "big promises" which look a lot like train wrecks waiting to happen.

#1. Batman Arkham Knight.

When I first saw the E3 2014 stage demo I was absolutely blown away. There's no denying that this game is going to be excellent to play. Looking at Rocksteady's track record with Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, it's clear that they know what they're doing.

One of the very first things I noticed about this game were the graphics. This game transitioned from cut-scenes which looked pre-rendered into actual gameplay footage that looked the same! My jaw was mopping the floor. I was even more impressed when I saw some button labels which indicated that the game was running on a PS4.

But during the interview, the man from Rocksteady was asked "what is this game running on here?", to which he replied "this is the PC build of the game".

So there you have it. The game was being showcased with PS4 controller labels, leading casual observers to believe that this is what the PS4 version will look like. In the meantime, it's supposed PC version footage.

If this was XBOX One controller labels on the game I would have understood since it's a popular controller to use for PC games. But to show PS4 controller labels on a game running from a PC? That sounds like the infamous Watch Dogs stunt from 2012.

My prediction: this game won't look as good as the demo shown during E3. It will be an epic game to play, but it's not going to look anywhere near as good as the demo shown.

#2. Assassins Creed: Unity

Whilst watching the demo the first thing that popped in my head was "this is a re-skinned Watch Dogs game from Ubisoft". The more I watched it, the more that thought was supported. I believe the game is based on the same engine as well - and we all know the issues that are plaguing it currently.

My prediction: for the love of Mike, do NOT pre-order this game. Learn from Watch Dogs. If history were to ever repeat itself, THIS would be the perfect opportunity. It's the same engine, made by the same people. You have been warned. It did look good though, but so did Watch Dogs.

#3. Mortal Kombat.

Holy crap. Best. Game. Ever.

Yeah, I'm a Mortal Kombat fanboy, but seriously, this is the best looking MK game I've ever seen. I love the new direction it's taking with its characters. It's returning to its dark and mysterious roots with some epic looking fatalities and fast paced gameplay.

My prediction: This is going to be one of the best games for 2015. Mortal Kombat is BACK!

E3 it seems, is becoming a showcase of what "games of tomorrow" will look and play like. Kind of like concept cars that blow the public away, with actual production models which chase the public away. You cannot take the information coming from E3 seriously anymore. It's all one big marketing gimmick.
