E3: Slimmer Xbox 360 revealed

I must say i like this xbox more than the white one. but still wont buy one it hard enough that i buy an operating system and office from microsoft and a few occasionaly games.

I also find the xbox controller uncomfortable and very heavy in comparison to the PS3 then again i was brought uo with sony. And it takes me 30mins to get use to the X360 control when ever i visit friends (atleast the few that bought Xbox due to the PS3 being out of budget)

Time to save up. I think my Xbox is about to pack-up again anyways. Might as well get one of these babies.

As far as controllers go I do prefer the Xbox controller, but both work fine for me. I swear some of you must have some seriously deformed mitts to battle using one or the other.

Nah, you know what it is? It's cause people are used to either the PS3 or Xbox controller. When they try the other, there's problems. I'm thinking if you spend equal amounts of time with both it gets better. My limit is 3 or 4 hours straight playing with the PS3 now.

I just don't think I'll ever like the trigger on the PS3 controller, don't know what $ony was thinking there.

Apparently a 500GB and 250GB PS3 model they will be unveiling later will also have 802.11n.

Can someone explain why a faster wireless connection is such a good thing if my ADSL line speed is stuck at 4Mbp/s? I'm sure it's better for media streaming, but when you're in South Africa with very "slow" broadband, that faster wireless adapter won't make any difference.

i grew up with a PS1 and i now have an xbox and i must say i do prefer the xbox controller, i like that its heavier. But i have to admit i do still refer to the buttons on my xbox controller to the "circle" or "square" etc. The BF scolds me often saying there arent buttons like that on my controller.... :)

I was just about to ask the same question.

There are other reasons as well, e.g. longer range, faster data rate, etc. If the Telkom rumours are to be believed many will sit with 8-10 Mbps ADSL lines soon.

HD movie streaming via your console anyone........?

Uh, the speed of the console's wireless adaptor has bugger all to do with your internet line speed, but rather your local network. Not just for media streaming from local devices, but also for moving between your console and modem / router. Wireless connectivity necessarily incurs higher latencies than wired - i.e. there's lag between your console and modem / router, as well as lag between your modem / router and remote servers - so the idea is to minimise this as much as possible.

Hey Azi,

I understand the dynamics of a network (really well). My question was supposed to let people understand that having a faster wireless standard in your XBOX would not really improve much in terms of using the console for online gaming and downloading. The ONLY time a faster wireless adapter would benefit you in a XBOX console would be for LOCAL media streaming and file copying.

Btw, the lag between your console and your router is so minimal that there is going to be NO noticeable difference between this new wireless adapter and the currently available one. That's a fact/

So to summarize:

Pros :

It will provide a slightly higher file transfer speed between your xbox and your PC. This means streaming will be better, and if you were a person copying a lot of files between your xbox and your pc (????) you will have a better experience.

Cons :

It will NOT improve your online experience with your XBOX at all. Your latencies will be the same and your "downloading speed" is dictated by your line speed going OUT of your router (Telkom 4mbps for ADSL). Your XBOX's wireless adapter (even the current one) is MUCH faster than the fastest broadband available in South Africa at the moment anyways.

Remember this: a network is only as fast as the SLOWEST part in that network. In a WAN situation (going to the internet) it's going to be your line speed out of your house. You can upgrade the wireless adapter in your xbox until you're blue in the face...it won't make a hint of difference. That 0.00001ms that your gaining with a better wireless adapter to your router won't mean a single damn thing because it's the latency going from the ROUTER to the OUTSIDE that dictates your overall experience.

In a LAN connection, and ONLY in a local LAN network will upgrading the wireless adapter in your XBOX show ANY improvement - and even that will be dependent on your router supporting that wireless standard.

Nuff said. That's how the technology works. Period. I work on a multi-billion rand network every single day for the past 8 years...you can really trust me on this.

If I can digress a bit. I understand the reason why they're including the Wireless adapter in the new XBOX is because it's a major feature that was missing from the original console. You could add it on by buying the official microsoft wireless adapter, but it was very expensive. I'm just annoyed at MS because they're probably going to end up marking this "super fast wireless" in the new Xbox console as a means to tell uneducated customers that it will somehow "improve" their online gaming.

I think what they're pulling here is actually very much the same as Apple's new iPhone 4's video calling marketing.

It's a technology which was strangely missing from the original device. Everyone had access to the technology in other devices. But now that Apple "finally" brought in video calling capabilities, they're acting as if it's a world first technology that they're granting us mere mortals. Microsoft is doing the same thing. They're saying it has a super fast wireless adapter built in. We SHOULD be saying: "whoop-dee-doo".

I didn't need the lecture on networks either. I've been using them for over a decade. :P

Also, let's be honest here - if Microsoft had used b or g wireless, nerds would complain that they weren't using n technology. I guess it's simply a matter of using the most current standard, and - perhaps significantly - a newer standard than the PS3's. ;) I'm also not sure Microsoft is trying to gull consumers into thinking it's going to improve their experience of online play at all, but rather just talking up their new gear.
