E3: Slimmer Xbox 360 revealed

Azi, i just need to find the links but newer versions of the Ps3 will also come with N based wifi...

Oh, really? Well, at the least then, Microsoft is matching their competitor. Either way, it just makes good business sense.

I didn't need the lecture on networks either. I've been using them for over a decade. :P

Also, let's be honest here - if Microsoft had used b or g wireless, nerds would complain that they weren't using n technology. I guess it's simply a matter of using the most current standard, and - perhaps significantly - a newer standard than the PS3's. ;) I'm also not sure Microsoft is trying to gull consumers into thinking it's going to improve their experience of online play at all, but rather just talking up their new gear.

I think we're on the same page concerning this. I always get fired up when I suspect someone might try to "over"sell their stuff. Most people do these days.

What I'm MORE interested in however is how the migration of data will work from your existing XBOX to this new one. I hope they don't use that whole "log into this website while you switch on your console" procedure because it was a flippen nightmare.

Either way....I'm getting one :)

I suppose now that if Microsoft have given the Xbox some actual quality, this does pose a huge competition. I guess the only thing they have to add now is a Blue Ray Xbox and we'll have identical machines...

Do you think that they would do so for those Xbox owners who want to watch BluRay movies on their consoles before
they release the successor to the 360?

Those living in bandwidth-rich countries with the full Xbox Live service can download movies from the Video Marketplace as it is.

How large a bite has BluRay taken out of DVD's piece of the movie disc pie and how many people have been downloading the video
content on offer rather than buying DVD or BluRay discs?

I see your point, but I have just one more to raise. Both Sony and Microsoft seem to be very concerned with turning their gaming machines into all round multimedia machines which only means that they're concentrating more on one thing and concentrating less on another - money and gaming respectively. I really couldn't care what movies my Xbox could play or what other things my Playstation could download -I can do all of this with a computer and not to mention that it is just easier doing it that way. These developers need to concentrate on what really matter most, and that is the gaming aspect of the system, because, at the end of the day, most people still use their computers for internet browsing and downloading. It's just simpler.

I woulld be interested in knowing what compromises, if any, are made with respect to console hardware
to cater for multimedia playback. Not many, I would guess. The CPUs and GPUs in the PS3 and Xbox 360
have been expressly designed to crunch audio and 2D/3D video data as quickly as possibly while staying within a
certain price range. [Usually around $300 or less]. Provided the necessary codecs are installed, I don't see the price
of the hardware being increased to allow the machine in question to act as an all-round entertainment centre...unless
you happen to have a console with a very low-capacity hard disk, or none at all.

But I digress.

While I agree that many of us may find it easy to store and view or listen to our multimedia content on our PCs,
there are those to whom the ease of use of a media-enabled console may appeal. Some may simply
want to turn on their consoles [they do boot up quicker than PCs] and wide-screen tvs, select a movie and let their
console take care of the rest. When they want to play a game, they are assured that any game published for their
machine will [should?] just work. While console games may not look as pretty as equivalent titles on souped-up gaming
pcs, they don't cost nearly as much either, something I believe may appeal to many people.

For someone who already has an HD television set and is prepared to shop around for games, R3000
or so is not that bad considering the functionality one will be enjoying. I know that I would rather have a
R3000 console than a R3000 PC. [I know that console hardware is subsidised by the sale of games for these machines]

I will say that I prefer to surf the web and do my instant messaging using a mouse and keyboard.

Really well put Phoenix... have a very similar experience to what you have said regarding pc's, has made me think of getting an xbox or Ps3

Hey Asshole, I think that's a very good idea you've got there. Both consoles have an incredible library of titles available at this point, so the decision is quite a difficult one.
