EA: Syndicate failed, old IP still to be resurrected

Electronic Arts has admitted that the attempted Syndicate reboot didn't pay off as intended, but that hasn't stopped the publisher from wanting to bring back more old game names. After all, there's still so many things that it could turn into a first-person shooter!

"Syndicate was something that we took a risk on. It didn't pay off -- it didn't work," confessed Frank Gibeau, to CVG. "But in general it doesn't change my appetite for wanting to go look in the library and see what we have and maybe bring back some IPs for the next-generation. That's the nature of the business; some stuff works, some stuff doesn't."

He said the SSX resurrection, at least, did well.

"I think SSX was a very successful launch for us and there was some online innovation there that really showed why it made sense to bring that back. It's done well and you'll probably see more in the future. There are numerous IPs that I think about all the time like Command & Conquer and SimCity -- which is a brand we've brought back after seven years."

Can't wait to see what EA turns into an FPS next! Theme Hospital? Dungeon Keeper? The possibilities for new FPS games are endless!

Let's make a SimCity FPS :)

Ironically, I bought Syndicate this week, and it surprised me by actually being rather fun. I'm peeved at the series being FPS-ified, but on its own, the Syndicate FPS isn't half bad. The only thing that really pisses me off is that it abuses QTE.

Makes one wonder, if it weren't called Syndicate, how it would have fared.

SSX worked because - Shock! Horror! - they stuck to the core of what made the originals great.

Reboot Syndicate as a B-grade FPS? You're not gonna fool the old-school gamers that remember how great syndicate was and why. An FPS isn't the game they wanted - you lost them from day one. Next, it didn't even do much to stand out from the overcrowded FPS market in its own right, so unsurprising that it wasn't a "success".

What they are doing with SimCity looks to be on the right path IMO. Lets hope they don't introduce launch day DLC - the water pipes expansion! Pay $10 extra on launch day to get the water infrastructure tool! We totally didn't rip this from the full game before launch...

They could make a Command and Conquer FPS....

OH WAIT...........

Didn't they learn from this shit ? =/

I actually think CnC renegade had some merit, sure the game itself may not have been good but the ideas it tried to introduce were worth going into.

Hell I'd love to play that type of game now when done properly. Starhawk is a pretty good example of how that can be done right by mixing base building and strategy with FPS action. Natural Selection was also something that did that well.

Well-said, señor :)

I think they're onto something here. New exciting ways of ruining good ip's...

I have had a few of my own:

* Need fore speed hot pursuit 13 but as a point and click adventure.
* The sims 4 but as a 2d side scroller.
* Call of duty 7 black field special operation vietnam but as a trading card game.
* Mass Effect 4 as a board game like monopoly. But instead of hotels, you build expectations. Also, you will need to buy all the "galactic community chest" cards separately at only $9.99 per card(Not vital to game play or backstory.................lol).

I'll take my bonus early, thanks.

So I'm the only one who thinks it's not a bad game?

I reckon if it was called anything else people would have sang its praises. :p

I've had for months now, but I haven't had the time to actually play it. From what I've seen I'm quite intrigued, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I've played about 2 hours and having never played the original I found it a competent shooter even if it wasn't an A+ one. I have played worse shooter, Turok jumps to mind, but I dont think, from what I've played, that I would call it a bad game.

I agree, its pretty good unlike duke forever that took 15+ years to developed and ended up failing miserably.

I don't think anyone said it was bad but rather just bland, uninspired with grey visuals with a predictable and dull plot, like the hoard of other shooters of it's type hence it just got lost in the crowd. Many places did comment on how the co-op mode was pretty fun. So I really doubt a name change would have done anything for it, hell we would probably have forgotten it existed already had it not been for the name/IP controversy.

I enjoyed Syndicate too but I admit I was dissapointed when I heard it was going to be an FPS. What I was hoping for was a more Mass Effect 1 style of squad combat with Dragon Age (PC) viewpoints selection. It was also missing DeusEx style customisation which I thought would've been a no brainer seeing as you play as a cyborg.
