Electric or Fossil Fuel

I you had the opportunity to buy a new car tomorrow would you consider an electric car like Tesla (if they were available) or would you still go for a petrol/diesel car.

Well I'm trying very hard to avoid buying a car...so neither.

On balance I'd probably still go for petrol. Paying crazy elec prices and the infrastructure isn't here. So petrol is still more convenient.

I'd love a Tesla, however I'd only consider one if the infrastructure was there in terms of charging stations. Even then though, you would need a few days to travel from Cape Town to JHB by car.

For now I think petrol/diesel is still where it is at, unless you are going to use the car for city driving and perhaps short weekend drives.

Trying to be mustachian or just avoiding a long term financial commitment?
Kinda. Lifestyle choice more than mustachian. I spend a fkload of money on rent (equivalent of a quarter million zar a year)...but that also means I can walk anywhere that I need to (work is like 5 mins walk away). A car + less central accommodation would probably be slightly cheaper so as I said more about lifestyle.

But yeah driving an oldish car in SA for years also made me dislike cars on a whole. They're expensive, often unreliable and sitting behind the wheel for hours each day is not a good use of my time.

It all depends on the reasoning. Do you go electric because its a cool new tech gadget? Or would you go electric to try and save the environment? I would like to think that something like a Tesla S would make more sense in the long run, especially if we get the solar powered "gas stations". But I also read somewhere that their construction leaves a larger damage to the environment thanks to their batteries and the toxicity thereof?

The geek in me is extremely excited about a car like the Tesla. Self-driving, fast charging, online. But the "environmentalist" in me thinks they would simply not work without a clean energy source. The way the country's energy problems are at the moment I doubt it would be very clean. And apparently solar panels leave a larger carbon footprint than they save in the manufacturing process.

All that being said, I would love a Tesla, as I am more geek than environmentalist...
