Ellen Page's moving speech at the Time to Thrive Conference

Okay, but again, I'm seeing a LOT of biased aggression towards a comment that should be contemplated and ultimately respected, even if it's not being agreed with.

The whole thing about homosexuality not being a choice is still extremely debatable and I don't think we have the maturity (at least in this thread) to go about it. But what you are saying still plays to my very first comment:

Why, in today's time when there are so many alternative views and opinions, does someone have to be labelled as "x" when they don't agree with those decisions and or life choices?

I have my reasons, be it religious and or otherwise, that drive me to not agree with homosexuality. Just that notion immediately gets me labelled. A classic case of hypocrisy where the one subject is labelled, because he does not accept the views of the majority in that environment. That's not fair folks. No matter how you look at it.

You go even further to say that someone who does not agree with another person's sexuality is "as good as" a racist. Geesh - really?

You expect others to respect the choices (again, it's still debatable) of others and want to celebrate them, yet, when someone else comes out saying that they don't agree with that - you cannot find it in yourself to respect that person's view? That's the problem here.

So I, as a gay man, say I did not choose it, and my mother even took me to a psychologist at 2 years old as she suspected it THEN already, but you will still say it's debatable? So I'm lying then?

It isn't debatable. You don't choose to be gay. There have been no less than 3 gays guys in this very thread who said the same thing. I'll take their opinions (because they are gay) instead of yours (who is not). Same way you don't choose to dig girls. Things just float your boat and there is nothing that you can do about it. You can't pray the gay away.

You go even further to say that someone who does not agree with another person's sexuality is "as good as" a racist. Geesh - really?

Well...in both cases, people can't help their situations and they are given flak for it. So, basically the same theme.

Jesus christ, Neo. There is nothing to debate. Homosexuality is not a choice. Homosexuals the world around will tell you it's not. Homosexuals in this very thread have told you it's not. This isn't rocket science. They're not lying to you to rock your fragile little boat.

Once you get this in your head and stop trying to tell homosexuals that you, a heterosexual, know better than them why they're homosexual, you'll understand why your bigoted opinion isn't respected and why it shouldn't be respected.

Your head is so firmly stuck in the ground that it would take 7 Hiluxes and two elephants to pull you out. And even then, maybe not.

I am not going to open that can of worms. Sorry.

So far, no one has been able to formulate an adult reply to this simple question: Why is my decision to not agree with someone else's lifestyle incorrect and unacceptable? I assure you, I am not the only person why does not agree with it. I am also not one of those people that persecutes gay people or treat them differently. Yet, you all act as if I go on "anti-gay" rallies with a white hoodie over my head, brandishing a torch whilst riding a black stallion.

Surely no one here agrees with every other person's lifestyle and choices? It certainly shouldn't be a reason for getting you labelled. Yet, if someone doesn't agree with homosexuality in a personal capacity, watch out.....here come the insults.

No folks. You need to understand that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. For every person that agrees with you, there is bound to be someone that doesn't. I have rights. I have a right to not agree with something. Is that wrong? No. And you're just as guilty for trying to lash out at me for practising my right to an opinion

Ok well I give up. Somehow he doesn't understand that not agreeing with something someone had no control over is not socially acceptable anymore.

Because you can't. You have nothing to bring to the table other than "the bible tells me so."

It's not a choice. No matter how hard you throw your little temper-tantrums and stick your fingers in your ears, it doesn't change that fact.

You are no different to someone who says he doesn't agree with someone's choice to be black.

See, now you guys are just lambasting me because I'm a Christian. Like I said, you probably laugh at some folk who don't eat pork as well.

Even when I clearly explain my point, which I believe to be valid, you still cannot resist the chance to insult me personally. I think that sums up this forum.

There isn't one good lifestyle and a bunch of rubbish other ones. I can agree with everyone's lifestyle. If they're not hurting anyone and don't make problems for me, why would I hold what they enjoy against them?

Because if it's your choice to not agree with something, due to whatever reason, you should be free to uphold that disagreement. I'm not hurting anyone by disagreeing with them. So, by your own argument, I'm not wrong either.

What is your problem here, Neo? You refuse to believe when homosexuals tell you how homosexuality works, now you're being victimized because of that?

Giving me neg-rep isn't going to change the fact that you're wrong about homosexuality being a choice and that you have no leg to stand on. Tell us why homosexuals who know they never made a choice are wrong and you, a heterosexual, are actually right. Go on then.

wow, that was an emotional speech. she is amazing :) iv never seen someone with that much courage to stand up to the world and express themselves.well done Ellen! :)

But you are being bigoted because your decision not to agree with their lifestyle stems from a lie. You're more than welcome to uphold that disagreement, but if you want it to go unchallenged go to Stormfront.

People who are wrong should be called out on it. They should not be respected for being wrong and pampered because "haai shame, dis wat jy glo nie."

Anyway, sorry, I keep falling for this troll's bait. Let's just all place him on our ignore list and maybe if nobody responds to the drivel he posts, he'll go away. He's clearly shown us that he's entrenched in his opinion and is unwilling to change, even when presented with solid evidence that he's wrong.

You don't seem to get the idea that people have the right to disagree with you. If you cannot grasp the concept, then I fear any further debate is lost on you. Do you have a problem with people who disagree with your views which you deem to be absolute (apparently)? Hitler had the same problem. Then he killed people. Don't go there.

Only ONE person on here gave a valid, grown-up response to my initial comment in this thread. Which amounted to "Fine, you don't agree with their lifestyle - just don't go moerring them because of it". Which I lol'ed because it's a perfect, sane reply. But no....the gay-hating-bible-bashing-troll has to pay for his views.

I apologise for ONE thing only in my replies to this thread: for bringing in religion. However, I didn't know simply mentioning it would result in the explosion that did. So, my apologies to Solitude. I admit that was uncalled for and bad form on my part.

As for everyone else: if you cannot bring yourself to respect someone else's views. There's no way they'll respect yours. End of story.

You are free to believe whatever you want. All of us are.

But I rather do believe that you are pretty hurtful and full of disrespect. You've mentioned numerous times how gay people have a choice in the matter (which is completely false - you can't choose what gives you a boner) and something along the lines of 'God frowns upon them'. That sounds pretty hurtful to me.

I'm not hurting anyone by disagreeing with them.

Except in this case you most likely are hurting them. Many people are afraid to come out and live a lie because they are afraid of people like you, who try to make them feel ashamed of who or what they really are.

You don't agree with mine

No idea what you're talking about.
:wtf:

I think what people are trying to say is that being gay doesn't do anyone else any harm, but the concept that being gay is bad or wrong, that there's something wrong with you if you are gay, and worse, that it's a sin and you'll be damned for it, that does a massive amount of harm to gay people, especially to young people who haven't figured themselves out yet. And other kids pick up on the idea, and kids are very cruel. People can't be who they are because of the idea that it's bad.

Being part of the this concept, whether you are silent or mild about it or militant and vocal about it, all contributes to the idea as a whole. The more people accept that this is how things are, the stronger and more pervasive the idea becomes, and the more harmful it is. This idea needs opposition, and gay people need to know that there are straight people who do support them.

It's not an easy thing to be gay, and just knowing that people are constantly judging you (even if they don't say anything out loud) must be a very painful thing. I know a wonderful gay couple who are really uncomfortable being in social situations where there are a lot of straight people in general, even if none of them have a problem with it, I guess they are just so used to the disapproval that they subconsciously expect it from all straight people.
